Re 2:23b  … I am He who searches the minds and hearts; and I will give to each one of you according to your deeds.

Look again at the verses stating who God is.

He is the way, He is the truth, He is the life, He is a shield.  He is with us, He will bless us, He will keep us, He will never leave us.  He will redeem us, He will heal us.  He is gracious, He is our inheritance.  He will strengthen us, He will help us, He will uphold us.  He is our Savior, the First, the Last, God.  He makes all things, including light and darkness.  Comforts and calamities come from God.  He made the heavens and the earth.  He saves us.  He teaches us. He rules the waters.  He delights in exercising lovingkindness, justice and righteousness.  He delivers us. Nothing is too difficult for Him.  God is gentle, God is humble, and in Him we find rest.  He is the source of life, our complete fulfillment.  He is our saving door, He is our good Shepherd, and He knows us.  Without Him we can do nothing.  God is the beginning and the end.  He knows our heart. He knows our mind.

After reviewing Who God is, is there any better place to put your hope?

God is the resource of all resources!  In Him are infinite possibilities.  In Him is guaranteed success in living a life pleasing to God.  He will not fail.  In Him we have everything!  We have a certain promise of a future in heaven.

Trust is imperative.  Faith is the key.  Hope is the promise.

So put all your eggs in one basket and hold that basket up to God!  Since He has provided everything, all you have comes from Him and belongs to Him.  We are stewards and are asked to manage His gifts wisely.  God is the greatest financial counselor, marriage counselor, education counselor, family counselor, child counselor.  If we don’t give Him everything, we are holding out because our faith in His abilities are weak.

What is the purpose of diversifying funds? If one investment falls, you’ve kept some of your value in another.  It would be unlikely for everything to lose its value at once.  Although, historically this has happened.  The purpose of investing is to grow what you have so that you have more.  Or, at the very least, protect what you have.  The world’s eyes are pleased with riches.  Money equals security for now and for the future.  What is the fallacy in this?  Is there a better investment for your present and future security?

Pr 16:3  Commit your works to the LORD, and your plans will be established.

works <ma’aseh> actions, a transaction; property; business, labor, occupation, possessions

When all our actions are referred to God, He will cause results that honor Him and bless us. 2Ti 1:12 For this reason I also suffer these things, but I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day.

Both our bodily and spiritual interests will be safe when we place them in the Lord's hands, and, through the peace which will result from our faith, our thoughts will become steady, calm, resolute, and joyful.  Spurgeon Devotional Commentary

Whatever we do, when done in accordance with God’s will, we will prosper in the things which are truly important.

Ps 37:5 Commit your way to the LORD, Trust also in Him, and He will do it.

Jas 1:17 Every good thing bestowed and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation, or shifting shadow.

Anything good in our life and all benefits have been given to us by God.  God is the source of all that is good and His character does not change.

Joh 3:27 John answered and said, "A man can receive nothing, unless it has been given him from heaven.

Mal 3:6 "For I, the LORD, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed.

God is as much the AUTHOR of our earthly good, as he is of our eternal salvation. Earthly blessings are simply good; but they are imperfect, they perish in the using.  The blessings of grace and glory are supreme goods, they are permanent and perfect;  Divine Instructions, LACTANTIUS, 300A.D.

Every good gift, whether it be our reasonable faculties, or virtuous dispositions, or outward happy circumstances, and every perfect gift, pardon of sin, the favour of God, and eternal life, is from above, descending from God the author of all virtue and happiness, with whom there is no variableness nor shadow of change.  Macknight

Heb 13:8 Jesus Christ [is] the same yesterday and today, [yes] and forever.

So go ahead and put all your eggs in one basket – and trust God to make the most of what He’s given you for His glory!

Out of Control…

Things happen! Difficult things happen! Unfair things happen! Tragic things happen! Where do you go for understanding, for comfort? How do you respond to those unexpected tragedies?

OUT OF CONTROL…

In 2008, Natalie Grant released the song In Christ Alone. Read the words to the first line below.

In Christ alone my hope is found, He is my light, my strength, my song.

Things happen!  Difficult things happen!  Unfair things happen!  Tragic things happen!  Where do you go for understanding, for comfort?  How do you respond to those unexpected tragedies?  Is there truth to be considered in the lyrics written above?

Consider.  Hope placed in any resource, except that of the promises of God, is at best fleeting.  Temporary comfort, brief periods of peace, momentary relief, and abbreviated times without stress, can be found.  Religion or religious entities offer some answers.  But, following a religious beliefs and customs, adhering to standards written by men, practicing rituals in order to attain peace are all things WE do.  Consider. If we had the power within ourselves to bring about true lasting peace in all circumstances, why did God send His Son to die on the cross?  In Christ Alone…

1Pe 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

2Co 1:3  Blessed [be] the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort;

A living hope.  Living.  Something that endures.  Something active.  Something in existence.  Not dead. Not extinct.

In Christ alone my hope is found.   Truth – when we take ourselves out of the equation.  Dependence on me, on myself, in doing anything other than relying upon God’s promises, offers only temporary hope.  Devastation and unforeseen tragedy will kill all hope found in anything but Christ.

Ex 15:2 "The LORD is my strength and song, And He has become my salvation; This is my God, and I will praise Him; My father's God, and I will extol Him.

He is my light, my strength, my song.

God created light.     Ge 1:3-5 Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. And God called the light day, and the darkness He called night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.

God gives light.  He gives us understanding.    Ps 119:105 Thy word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path.     Ps 119:130 The unfolding of Thy words gives light; It gives understanding to the simple.

Christ is our strength.  1Ch 16:11 Seek the LORD and His strength; Seek His face continually.

How is Christ our strength?  He is our force, our security, our majesty, our praise, our boldness, our power.  Ps 29:11 The LORD will give strength to His people; The LORD will bless His people with peace.  Ps 37:39 But the salvation of the righteous is from the LORD; He is their strength in time of trouble.

The Lord is my song.  My reason for praise.

Ps 103:1-5 (A Psalm of David.) Bless the LORD, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget none of His benefits; Who pardons all your iniquities; Who heals all your diseases; Who redeems your life from the pit; Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion; Who satisfies your years with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle.

Ps 34:1-6 (A Psalm of David when he feigned madness before Abimelech, who drove him) (away and he departed.) I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul shall make its boast in the LORD; the humble shall hear it and rejoice. O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt His name together. I sought the LORD, and He answered me, and delivered me from all my fears. They looked to Him and were radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed. This poor man cried and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.

This Cornerstone, this solid ground, firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace, when fears are stilled, when strivings cease. My Comforter, my All in All, here in the love of Christ I stand.”  2008, Natalie Grant

Always out of our control…  NEVER OUT OF GOD’S CONTROL

Hope found in Christ gives us light in the darkness, strength when we’re weak and reason to praise at all times!

KINGS AND KINGDOMS

Kingdoms. Kings. Knights in shining armor. Princes and princesses. Dragons and bad guys and those trying to thwart the peace in the land. Understanding of this concept begins at a very early age. This time of year especially, the costumes come out. Go to almost any public area and dozens of children and even several adults will be disguised as characters from popular storybooks and movies.

Kingdoms.

Are you part of God’s kingdom?  It is not make-believe or a clever story written for the latest fairy tale movie.  It is real.  Through Jesus it is attainable.  God’s Kingdom will stand. Forever.

Heb 12:28 Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe;

We, God’s children, have received an inheritance in His kingdom which is immovable, indestructible, and eternal.  This is a promise!  Security like none we’ve ever known is given to us once we sincerely accept in our heart the sacrifice made for us in Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection.  This is incredible.

Da 7:14 "And to Him was given dominion, Glory and a kingdom, that all the peoples, nations, and men of every language Might serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion which will not pass away; and His kingdom is one which will not be destroyed.

Mt 25:34 "Then the King will say to those on His right, 'Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.

1Pe 1:4-5 to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

Can you think of anything else you have received that even comes close to having this kind of stability and value?  We’re talking eternal protection from danger, freedom from anxiety and fear, an intimate relationship with God, King of Kings and Lord of Lords and the promise that trusting in Him alone will always turn out for our good and His glory. And all this is encompassed in a love from God that is much greater than we are able to comprehend.

What is your response to this truth?  Hebrews 12:28 goes on to give us the response we should have:  ‘let us show gratitude’!

Ps 19:14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in Thy sight, O LORD, my rock and my Redeemer.

Ro 12:1-2 I urge you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

Something good benefits others.  Acceptable means well-pleasing.  Perfect is completeness.  Hmmmm, showing gratitude in God leads to service that profits others, is worthy of God’s approval and comes from a pure heart.

Showing gratitude doesn’t come from a costume we put on.  It comes from a heart of thankfulness for the King and Kingdom we belong to!

Heb 12:28 Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe;

Let’s consider the first word in this scripture, but please bear with me as we do…  Therefore refers to the previous verses speaking of the great earthquake at Mt. Sinai when the Law was given.     Ex 19:18 Now Mount Sinai was all in smoke because the LORD descended upon it in fire; and its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked violently.  In contrast, the kingdom of heaven cannot be moved.

“…a kingdom that cannot be shaken, in opposition to the law, which was an imperfect and alterable dispensation;” William Burkitt New Testament

I can only attempt to garner a simple understanding of what is contained in all the events of God shaking the heavens and the earth.  I am no Biblical scholar, just a child of God with a heart full of love for Him.  In the book of Haggai there is the account of God shaking the heavens and the earth which seems to relate to clearing of the church.

Hag 2:6-7 "For thus says the LORD of hosts, 'Once more in a little while, I am going to shake the heavens and the earth, the sea also and the dry land. 7 'And I will shake all the nations; and they will come with the wealth of all nations; and I will fill this house with glory,' says the LORD of hosts.

The earth physically shook at Christ’s death and resurrection.  See Luke 23:44-45.  Matthew Poole’s Commentary explains this shaking as not only a physical phenomenon but also a “powerful, moral shaking”.   Once again, when Christ comes back to earth, there will be an extraordinary shaking of the world.  All enemies, all hypocrites, all deceivers will fall under the wrath of God.

What do we know for certain?  God will judge His kingdom in order to cleanse it! When God speaks, creation listens!  God is righteous and powerful!

Heb 12:27 And this [expression], "Yet once more," denotes the removing of those things which can be shaken, as of created things, in order that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.

No wonder the next part of Hebrews 12:28 says “let us show gratitude”!

The word gratitude is actually translated to grace in the KJV.  Grace <charis> means graciousness (as gratifying), of manner or act; especially the divine influence upon the heart, and its reflection in the life; including gratitude.  We certainly have reason to be thankful.

Sincerity usually shows itself through some kind of action.   Consider:  anger, happiness, contentment, fright, apprehension, and many other conditions are noticeable through our words, tone of our voice, actions and efforts or lack thereof. When we truly understand what we have in Christ, we will not be able to suppress our gratitude!  Our actions will reflect thankfulness; our demeanor will be characterized by reverence for God.  We will be consumed with the desire to give of ourselves through worship and service.   Consider:  If you take worshipping God and serving Him through others out of the equation of your life, what would be left?  Hopefully, your answer would be nothing – NADA—Zero -- ZIP.

Ps 107:1 Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; for His lovingkindness is everlasting.

Joh 11:41 And so they removed the stone. And Jesus raised His eyes, and said, "Father, I thank Thee that Thou heardest Me.

Eph 5:20 always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father;

Col 3:15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful.

Col 3:17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.

1Ti 4:4-5 For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected, if it is received with gratitude; for it is sanctified by means of the word of God and prayer.

Heb 13:15 Through Him then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name.

Col 2:7 having been firmly rooted [and now] being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, [and] overflowing with gratitude.

What defines your life?  What is the motivation for everything you do?  If you’re thinking this is pretty extreme, it is!  You’re right!  We should be striving to serve God to the greatest degree possible, to the extent of giving of our lives for Him.  If you are single, where is your time and energy spent?  If you are married, serving God will include serving your spouse.  Having children is an opportunity to offer service to God with a gentle heart towards your children even when you may be exhausted or have said something for the umpteenth time.  Are you getting on in years with your family grown?  Retiring from serving isn’t an option!  Rather, retiring from the work that provided monetary resources frees up more time to serve those around you.  Perhaps in a different, less physical way for some but, we can all offer prayer and encouragement.

Hebrews 12:28 says we show gratitude by offering ‘acceptable  service’.

Acceptable to God.  Pleasing Him well.  Why?  Because we hold Him in reverence and awe.   This means we understand our unworthiness.  It means to have a profound respect and holy fear of our amazing God.  An overwhelming feeling of wonder and admiration than causes us to bow before the Almighty, desiring to live our lives in obedience to Him.

Eph 1:6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.

Eph 5:10 trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.

Ps 2:11 Worship the LORD with reverence, and rejoice with trembling.

1Pe 1:17 And if you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each man's work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay upon earth;

Extreme living –

by God’s children, for His glory!

A Voracious Appetite

The Bible is not a course we take and complete, it is a life-giving, life-sustaining gift from the very mouth of God. It is to be treasured, pondered over, and used frequently.

Lily 2009 costume

Ps 119:131 I opened my mouth wide and panted, for I longed for Thy commandments.

This is a very descriptive set of words.  It paints a picture for us of the great desire the Psalmist has for Truth.  You might even want to start at the beginning of Psalm 119 and mark each time God’s word is mentioned.  There are several references used for the word:  law, way, testimonies, commandments, precepts, word, judgments, statutes, and saying.

Below are the Hebrew definitions from Strongs Concordance  for a few of the words we’ll  take a closer look at.

opened <pa’ar> to yawn, open wide

mouth <peh> can also mean mind, speech

panted <sha’aph> to inhale eagerly; desire earnestly, devour

Let’s remember the writer of this Psalm.  David endures imprisonment, accusation and persecution because of his love for God.  Throughout this entire Psalm, the love he has for God’s word dominates.  David recognizes his need for Truth at all times in his life, whether he is in adversity or prosperity. In all circumstances, the Psalmist calls upon the word of God for his sustaining comfort and encouragement.

“I opened my mouth wide and panted” is something we can readily picture. Think of inhaling eagerly, desiring earnestly, and devouring – these words are indicative of serious need and want.  Picture this: a newborn baby who has slept for six hours (probably 3-4 is a more realistic time ) then wakes with an insatiable hunger for its mother’s milk.  It is impossible to appease the infant with anything but what is desired.  There is nothing else that will fill its need!

Picture a puppy inhaling its food.  It seems as though it just can’t get enough and the only thing on its mind is to eat.  One of our dogs, Lily, is a French Bull Dog.  The picture at the beginning of this blog is from Halloween a few years back, complete with a skull and crossbones tattoo – I couldn’t help myself!  As sweet as she is, she is not at all loyal to any one person, rather, the hand that fills her dish becomes her temporary best bud. Food is her obsession.  It is evident in the noisy way she eats, (I’ve often thought we should have named her piglet), and with the gusto she uses to inhale her food.  When she was a puppy, we would have to put a rock in the center of her bowl in order to slow down her gulping the contents. Her appetite has never waned, it is still voracious!  This behavior would not be welcomed in anyone of us, but when related to our appetite of God’s word, it is a good thing to desire.

David explains his words to us.  Why did he open his mouth and pant?  Because he longed for God’s commandments.  His desire for God’s truth is strong.  Think of the word yearning.  I love this word used in connection with God’s word because it describes a prolonged desire or need, a need that is never completely filled.  Let me explain:  We can never get enough of the Truth.  There is always more.  More insight, more encouragement, more instruction, more conviction, more knowledge of God’s love for us and how unfathomable it is!  Heaven forbid we ever get to the place where we think we are finished studying God’s truths or have it all together or don’t need more input.  The Bible is not a course we take and complete, it is a life-giving, life-sustaining gift from the very mouth of God.  It is to be treasured, pondered over, and used frequently.  It is quite different than any other book we might have.

Textbooks are used for a time, learned, memorized, spit out on a test and forgotten.  They also frequently become outdated as new versions are published.  Cookbooks may be used frequently but most of us use them for quick reference then put them away.  We don’t ponder what they mean or how a recipe can change our life!  Storybooks or novels are read for amusement, for recreation.  The Bible is always relevant, not meant to be forgotten and shelved, and hopefully referenced so often that it is always handy.  It is meant for us to ponder and it absolutely changes lives as God opens desiring hearts to know Him.

In God Alone

How strong is your desire to know God?  Can you affirm with the Psalmist his words, “I opened my mouth wide and panted, for I longed for Thy commandments”?

Take a moment and picture the words we’ve been given below…

Ps 42:1-2 As the deer pants for the water brooks, So my soul pants for Thee, O God. 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God; when shall I come and appear before God?

Ps 63:1 (A Psalm of David, when he was in the wilderness of Judah.) O God, Thou art my God; I shall seek Thee earnestly; my soul thirsts for Thee, my flesh yearns for Thee, in a dry and weary land where there is no water.

Just a quick observation of the above verse.  The Psalmist understands that nothing available to him on the earth will suffice his need.  Only God has the means to refresh him.  Trying to find fulfillment in the world is like stringing yourself along with crumbs, temporary satisfaction until you find the next morsel.  God alone can fill His children’s needs and keep them completely quenched.

Ps 84:2 My soul longed and even yearned for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh sing for joy to the living God.

Ps 119:20 My soul is crushed with longing after Thine ordinances at all times.

One of the commentaries I read used the word zeal to describe the affection David had for God’s commands.  To be zealous for something is to have a feeling of strong eagerness towards it; excessive fervor, prompt willingness.  May we be accused and found guilty of our excessive love for God!

Consider.  Do you drink to your fill in God’s word, does it encompass every area of your life as you meditate on it and apply it, or do you just sample and taste here and there when things heat up or become difficult or encouragement is needed?  Do you starve yourself between Sunday services and scheduled Bible studies?  Are you reading the word like a glutton and pondering it’s meaning on Sunday and then perhaps Wednesday and maybe Thursday but not really throughout the week?

Many of us have that one favorite food that is difficult to pass up.  For some, it may be a salty potato chip or buttery popcorn, for others it may be a form of chocolate, or perhaps peanuts – you know, the ballpark peanuts in the shell.  If you eat just one, you desire more.  It invokes a craving that can’t be satisfied.  Hopefully you use restraint and limit yourself to a reasonable serving.

With God’s word there is no suggested portion size.  Go ahead and feast on His truth.  Let Him grow your appetite to know Him.  Be a glutton!  A glutton is someone devoted to excess eating and drinking. As you taste what Your Heavenly Father has for you, your desire will grow for more.  It’s true!  Spurgeon says, “When the word really enters the soul, it creates a strong desire for more holiness”.

In God alone His children find true and lasting Fulfillment and contentment.

Ps 81:10 "I, the LORD, am your God, Who brought you up from the land of Egypt; open your mouth wide and I will fill it.

Visit the word panted again.  WordWeb defines its meaning as, 1. to breathe noisily, as when one is exhausted, 2. to utter while panting, as if out of breath, and 3. to desire strongly or persistently.

I picture gasping for air like when you’re in a higher altitude and walking around.  You feel like you simply cannot get enough.  Or diving to the bottom of a deep pool and straining for breath as you resurface – you can barely suck enough air into your lungs when you reach the surface.  If you have asthma, you know the feeling quite well.  It’s this type of need David is speaking of in Psalm 119:131.

What do you desire most in your life right now?  I can remember being a single Mom with three very young children.  This was not in my plan but it was in God’s.  I wanted so badly to meet someone.  I missed the companionship of a husband and I was often overwhelmed with raising three children by myself. My desire was for a man to come into our lives and ‘save’ us.  As a new believer, my desire was sorely misplaced.  Thankfully, because of God’s grace in my life and others, an older, wiser woman gently set me on the better path of desiring God first and foremost.  I will never be able to thank Cindy enough for challenging me to concentrate on God by striving to emulate the hearts of the godly women He put forth in His word.  Her reasoning was so insightful:  she said, “It is that kind of woman, a woman who has devoted her heart and desires to know God more than anything else, that will attract a godly man”.   Recalling this conversation literally brings tears of joy and gratitude to my eyes.  I learned to long for God’s commandments more than anything else in life.  You know what’s cool about this?  God answered my prayer to know Him and He has continued to grow my desire for Him ever since.  What a loving, gracious, amazing God we have!

God’s commandments mentioned in the verse we are looking at are His laws, His ordinances, His precepts.  His written word given to us through the saints who were following Him thousands of years ago.  I bet they panted to know and understand God as they were instructed to pen His words.

Ps 119:20 My soul is crushed with longing after Thine ordinances at all times.

Joh 7:37 Now on the last day, the great [day] of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If any man is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.

Joh 4:14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life."

Rollercoasters and Socks

God doesn’t just play a game with us, moving us like pawns on a chessboard hoping everything will turn out as planned. He has specifically established His perfect plan for our lives.

Crazy – madness or insanity, possessed by inordinate excitement.

I had a crazy weekend with many unexpected turns, rearranged schedules and blown expectations of what was planned.  My plans changed and re-changed as God gave His direction, not in a complete picture of understanding, but in small glimpses of how we could help by being flexible.

A few things come to mind looking back at the last few days.  The saying “go with the flow” and scripture in Proverbs 16.

Go With the Flow.  This idiom has several interpretations of meaning.  One dictionary says it means to cope with adversity; to accept one’s lot. Another explains it as moving along with the prevailing forces, accepting the prevailing trend.  This would be much like the familiar picture of a school of fish all swimming in one direction.  As I looked at several other explanations of the saying, ‘go with the flow’, I realized that my use of these words didn’t really match up with all the definitions given.  Rather, my mind considers that going with the flow means to accept whatever direction God points.  It’s more than just coping with adversity, it’s looking at changes with a mindset that God’s plans will prevail and His plans are always better than the schedule I set for myself.  It is in that sense, to accept and move forward in His lead, that ‘go with the flow’ is a good description of this last weekend.  The adjective crazy does still apply however! Maybe insanity is a coping mechanism?!

The Bible always has the best interpretation of how I should be thinking, and it is always on point.   Proverbs 16:9 says “The mind of man plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps.  This verse sounds like my life!  The meaning of mind, or heart in the KJV, includes the feelings, will and intellect; basically everything about him.  Man plans his way.  I make plans, you probably make plans also.  We certainly make choices, we consider what direction to take, and we write our schedules in a calendar to keep track of them.  This is all good – as long as we’re ready to release our goals to be rearranged, flipped upside down or even thrown out by God’s better plans.  When I looked up the Hebrew word for directs’, I found it contains the words faithfulness, perfect, preparation, provide, stable and establish.  God doesn’t just play a game with us, moving us like pawns on a chessboard hoping everything will turn out as planned.  He has specifically established His perfect plan for our lives.  He is in control of all things and He is faithful!  This seems to go along with the verse in Romans 8:28.

Ro 8:28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to [His] purpose.

Yes, the events of this last weekend were not at all what we had planned!  We were going to celebrate our son-in-law’s birthday – He was called to take a last minute flight to family that was ill.  My oldest granddaughter and I had plans to work on a sewing project, we even purchased the fabric, then it became evident that just a time of snuggling and talk and encouragement was a much higher priority.  Our oldest son and his wife received news of complications of health in a family member.  Again, our plans were redirected to help with their children so they could attend to encouraging others.  Tired?  Yes!  Actually, kind of exhausted.  But, God is faithful!  We even had the energy to keep one of our grandsons overnight last evening so his Mommy could go to work.  Blessings? Yes!  From God – a calm, gentle spirit through all; thankfulness that He kept us available; encouragement by the responses in our grown children to immediately help others and the blessing to see their reliance upon God; opportunities to discuss with my oldest granddaughter how topsy-turvy events can still be a blessing; sweet early morning hugs from a grandson and many more blessings I’m sure we don’t even recognize. One more blessing of thankfulness to point out – I’m really thankful for the energy God gave me when I was younger to raise my kids!  Children take an enormous amount of time.  I am reminded to always keep our young families in prayer for steadfastness each day in God’s strength.

I don’t necessarily enjoy roller coasters, but this crazy, eventful life God has given me is definitely a reminder that I need to stay grounded in him through all the unexpected turns and somersaults He faithfully allows in my plans. For His good.  Because I love Him and am called by Him!

I pray your direction is clear, your plans remain flexible and your Savior blesses the socks off your feet as you follow Him in all things!

Fort Jefferson or Jesus?

A fortress is not only a place of safety but a place of strength.

Ps 91:2 I will say to the LORD, "My refuge and my fortress, My God, in whom I trust!"

My refuge - <machaceh> a shelter (literally or figuratively); hope, place of refuge, shelter, trust.

A refuge is a safe place.  Something or someone we turn to for assistance and security; a shelter from danger or hardship (WordWeb).  Think sanctuary or asylum.  Places of protection and safety.

My fortress - <matsuwd> a net, or (abstractly) capture; also a fastness; castle, defense, fortress, stronghold, strong place.

A fortress is not only a place of safety but a place of strength. A stronghold keeps the enemy out.  Fortresses were commonly built as defensive structures with weapons aimed and prepared to defend.  Several years ago, I visited the ruins of Fort Jefferson.  The picture below was taken while it was in active use.

Fort Jefferson is no longer in use as a military facility and is currently part of the Dry Tortugas National Park.

One of America’s largest masonry-built buildings was designed in the mid-1800s to ward off pirates from the Gulf of Mexico shipping lanes.  Located on Garden Key way out in the Florida Keys, past Key West, Fort Jefferson is made of more than 16 million bricks.  It was a massive upgrade from the lighthouse that originally stood on this spot.  The fort was in active use through the Civil War, mainly to house prisoners, but its thick walls weren’t as impressive by the late 1800s and it was abandoned as a fort.  The structure was never fully finished, but the six-sided fort covers 11 of the 16 acres of land on the key and remains a tourist destination.  Wikipedia.

Billions of dollars are spent in building structures for protection.  Think military fortifications that are currently in use, secretive buildings that require the latest technology in identification for access.  Is anything man-made immune from attack from an enemy?  Consider 9-11 and the Pentagon.  No matter how much money is spent or what technology is used, human kind is not impervious to attack.

But, where does the greatest source of infringement come from?  From within.  The same minds that work hard to think of ways to protect are the same minds that follow sin to the road of destruction and chaos.  Intelligence can be used for good; it can also be used for evil.  For attack.  There are numerous weapons used for physical attack in war.  Missiles, bombs, guns, grenades and, yes, even airplanes have been used as weapons.  While many of us have been spared the experience of bodily harm from enemies, most of us can relate in one way or another to internal onslaught.  Spiritual attack is often launched towards others from within.  The use of spoken words, written words or stirring up hostility within a group are methods of attack commonly used by people.  When this happens, where do you go?  Who guards your heart, your thoughts, and your actions in response to attack?

Think again about a physical place of refuge.  For all our efforts to provide physical protection, it eventually becomes outdated or wears out.  No man made structure is completely impervious to attack.  Buildings deteriorate, technology becomes old.  What was once the best we have, now lays in ruins.  Look at the pictures below of Fort Jefferson in July of 2009.

We do have an answer!  It is not all futility.  This is not a story of ho-hum humdrum, nowhere to go, wearisome thoughts.  Rather, it is reminder of the exciting benefit we can have in Christ as our strength and security.  The onslaught towards Truth is weak when met by God, our perfect and permanent refuge and strength.

Perfect Protection

Ps 91:2 I will say to the LORD, "My refuge and my fortress, My God, in whom I trust!"

As we take a closer look at Psalm 91:2, the first thing noticed is David, the Psalmist, is speaking to God.  The Hebrew word includes commune in its definition.  To commune with someone, according to our English definition, means to communicate intimately with and to be receptive to. There are several things apparent that need to be in place in order to have an intimate conversation with someone.

Proximity.  Closeness.  Nearness.

To speak with someone carries the necessity to at least be within a close parameter with them.  (In those days, there were no phones or computer technology!)   Do you know God?  The one and only God?  The True God of the Bible?

Jump to the end of Psalm 91:2.  It gives us a bit more information about David’s relationship with God.  It’s more than just knowledge of Him.  He addresses God as “my God”.  Consider those two words.  To what degree do these words affect the understanding we have of David’s relationship with God?  They personalize it!

We use the word ‘my’ to impress something about ourselves.  Using ‘my’ attached to a relationship stresses possession. Along with the words my God in Ps 91:2, there is a component of trust attached.

Trust.  To be confident or sure.  To be bold.  To have hope in.  In Judges 18:10, this same word is used to describe a secure people.

Hezekiah trusted in the Lord and it says in 2 Kings 18:5 that “after him there was none like him among all the kings of Judah”.  Why?  Because of his trust in God.

Read the beautiful picture of trust painted for us in Psalm 4:1.  As David cries out to God, he expects an answer because he knows God to be gracious to him.  He is distressed at the pursuits of those around him, yet he knows that his focus will remain set on God as he waits and trusts in Him.

Ps 4:1-5 (For the choir director; on stringed instruments. A Psalm of David.) Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness! Thou hast relieved me in my distress; be gracious to me and hear my prayer. 2 O sons of men, how long will my honor become a reproach? [How long] will you love what is worthless and aim at deception? 3 But know that the LORD has set apart the godly man for Himself; the LORD hears when I call to Him. 4 Tremble, and do not sin; meditate in your heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah. 5 Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and trust in the LORD.

When we possess an intimate relationship with God, we understand the gift we have in being able to trust in Him in all circumstances.  We will be able to call upon Him and know with certainty that He is our refuge and fortress from attacks on the outside and onslaughts from within.

Protection in God is complete, it is lasting and it is immediate.  It took eighteen months and billions of dollars to build one of the most secure buildings in the United States, the Pentagon, and it was not impervious to attack.  Who or where is your shelter and defense?  Can you say “my fortress” and “my refuge” when addressing God, as David did?

If your answer is yes, please share the hope and certainty you have with those you come in contact with.  If you sincerely care, you will share what is sincerely important to you!

If you are unable to proclaim God as your shelter, a personal relationship with Him is where you begin.  Acknowledging your imperfection, your sin.  Place your trust God’s absolute perfection, His sinless character.  Having a personal relationship with God requires a mediator because of the gulf between His sinless Majesty and our sinful nature.  Because God so desires a closeness to us, He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to pay for our sin.  The gulf between you and God has been closed when you accept your need of Jesus as your Savior. God then becomes the Lord and Master of your life.  God is your Father in Heaven.   Your Abba Father.  As His child, you receive an inheritance.  One of these gifts is the certainty of His protection.

Ro 8:1-15 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.  2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. 3 For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God [did:] sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and [as an offering] for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh,  4 in order that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.  5 For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6 For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, 7 because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able [to do so]; 8 and those who are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. 10 And if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness.  11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who indwells you. 12 So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh-- 13 for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, "Abba! Father!"

La 3:24 "The LORD is my portion," says my soul, "Therefore I have hope in Him."

Ps 73:26 My flesh and my heart may fail, But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

Ps 142:5 I cried out to Thee, O LORD; I said, "Thou art my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.

Broken Hearts

Back then, she would have proudly told you she could do anything.   With enough hard work, she would have the life she dreamed.  Dependence on others showed weakness.

Broken Hearts – Broken Dreams – Broken Trust

Consider the following phrases.  Work hard.  Laborious effort means success and then doors to dreams will open.  Others respond well to success.  Hard work will get you where you want to go.  Learn to live up to expectations.  Hard work helps make the sacrifices of those who love you seem worthwhile.  Be strong.  Don’t disappoint.

She was not a beauty, and average in just about everything. She didn’t really having a single, outstanding talent, but was willing to spend hours in becoming a stellar student.  She maintained a GPA worthy of receiving awards and recognition. In her senior year, an offer of full tuition to a well-known university was awarded.  So it seemed, she could excel, with no need to rely upon anyone else but her own relentless drive and hard work.

Back then, she would have proudly told you she could do anything.   With enough hard work, she would have the life she dreamed.  Dependence on others showed weakness.  She was convinced that she was solely responsible for the direction of her life. In fact, it was critical to take pride in yourself and your accomplishments in order to achieve goals.  Help was seldom needed. Confidence in one’s self was unquestionably the key.

Confidence that proved she could do it all.  Until that one day.   Suddenly unable to direct her future.  No matter how hard she tried, something she could not fix presented itself.  For the first time, hard work and self-assurance, and doing the “right” things, didn’t produce the expected outcome.  This was unimaginable.  A total failure. It was at that lowest point she was forced to accept she lacked the power to determine the direction of her life.  The independence and confidence that had always empowered, suddenly felt empty.  Just about everyone around her bailed out. No one liked failure.  It didn’t matter who was to blame.  What happened?

Human reality.  Sin.  Self.  Actions born out of pride, always looking for something more, something better.  People tiring of imagined promises of happiness.  Decisions made to end relationships that required more effort than seemed reasonable.  Responsibilities seeming overwhelming.  Then, after the bomb dropped, before the dust was even settled, came the realization that the source of her identity, fulfillment and hope wasn’t to be found in the person she originally thought was the answer to her future. The “I do’s”, the “I will’s”, the vows, all cast aside.  Sin. Man’s sin.  It happens.  All the time.  I am guilty.  You are guilty.  The affects are strong.  Often pointed to those ignorant and unsuspecting.  Often to those who have learned to rely on self because they are so engrossed at making things seem right that they don’t see what’s going on around them.  Often to those who have fooled themselves into thinking they controlled the direction of their life.  Most often to those who look to themselves for happiness and success.  Always to those who hold themselves in greater esteem than their Savior.

Broken hearts, broken dreams, broken confidences stem from confused hearts, self-serving dreams, and misplaced trust.

Jeremiah understood his need of God.  He desired God’s direction. Instead of being proud, he humbly acknowledged his weakness.  Jer 10:23 I know, O LORD, that a man's way is not in himself; nor is it in a man who walks to direct his steps.

The Bible supports the truth of God being in control of all things.  Read these verses from Proverbs.

Pr 16:9 The mind of man plans his way, but the LORD directs his steps.

Pr 19:21 Many are the plans in a man's heart, But the counsel of the LORD, it will stand.

No one wants to be dependent upon another.  It seems weak. It feels disqualifying and restricting.  Yet our relationship with God is built on dependence.  Total dependence.  We are unable to bring anything to the table of our own accord.  We need His grace and mercy in all things.  Complete dependence.  Absolute reliance upon God.

Because God loves us, His grace is often shown through the consequences He allows in our lives. The horrific consequences of sin.  Then, we fall to our knees, prostrate before Him.  Crying to Him for help as our life support.

Ps 116:6 The LORD preserves the simple; I was brought low, and He saved me.

Is this a sign of weakness or wisdom?  Both!

Recognizing our weakness bears the mark of wisdom. Understanding our dependence on God frees us from depending upon ourselves and others to make life meaningful.

Complete Dependence

In the following verse, Judah is invaded, Jehoshaphat orders the people to fast in order to seek the Lord.  He recognizes their success is dependent on God’s help and direction.

2 Chronicles 20:12: "O our God, wilt Thou not judge them? For we are powerless before this great multitude who are coming against us; nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are on Thee."

Read who David relied upon when slaying the giant:

1Sa 17:45 Then David said to the Philistine, "You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have taunted.

Asa did good in the sight of God and commanded Judah to seek and observe the laws and commandments of God.  The land of Judah was at rest until a battle was sought against them.  Asa immediately cries to God for help and protection.

2Ch 14:11 Then Asa called to the LORD his God, and said, "LORD, there is no one besides Thee to help [in the battle] between the powerful and those who have no strength; so help us, O LORD our God, for we trust in Thee, and in Thy name have come against this multitude. O LORD, Thou art our God; let not man prevail against Thee."

Ps 28:7 The LORD is my strength and my shield; My heart trusts in Him, and I am helped; Therefore my heart exults, and with my song I shall thank Him.

Work hard – to know God!  Depend on His call to your heart for direction.  Rely upon his help.  Trust Him with absolute confidence, He will support your desire to follow Him.

Joh 6:44 "No one can come to Me, unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day.

Joh 6:65 And He was saying, "For this reason I have said to you, that no one can come to Me, unless it has been granted him from the Father."

Laborious effort for personal success is just hard work for things that are insecure and ultimately unsatisfying and fleeting.  However, arduous labor rooted in dependence on God produces eternal results.  God’s expectations are clear.

Joh 15:5 "I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me, and I in him, he bears much fruit; for apart from Me you can do nothing.

God’s help is complete and always points to success of a higher degree, a promise of life everlasting.

Php 4:13 I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.

2Co 12:9 And He has said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness." Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may dwell in me.

1Pe 1:3-5  Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to [obtain] an inheritance [which is] imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

Dependence seems to support the idea of being weak.  Yet, Dependence on God proves strength.  Whoa!  Isn’t that opposite of the world’s thinking majority?  Yes it is!

Phil 3:20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ;

What is the life you want?  What are your plans?  Is your confidence secure?  If ‘self’ is anywhere embedded in the answers to these questions then a look at our human limitations is needed.  Notice the wording: the life you want, your plans; your confidence.  God’s plans for your life will come to fruition whether or not you’re on His team.

Read what the Apostle Paul writes:  Ro 7:18-23 For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the wishing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. 19 For the good that I wish, I do not do; but I practice the very evil that I do not wish. 20 But if I am doing the very thing I do not wish, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. 21 I find then the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wishes to do good. 22 For I joyfully concur with the law of God in the inner man, 23 but I see a different law in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind, and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my members.

Paul has personal knowledge of sin’s war in his life.  He also understands the solution to his problem.

Ro 7:24-25a Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death?  25a Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!

Back to our story of self-dependence.  Where does it lead?  Would you rather walk on a road that is unsteady, corrupt, and in ruins?  Or the road carefully laid down for you, out of love, by Your Savior?  Dependence upon God will never disappoint.

Joh 3:27 John answered and said, "A man can receive nothing, unless it has been given him from heaven.

Continuous help from God is needed. Steady maintenance in our soul is needed from the sustainer of our soul.

Ps 40:17 Since I am afflicted and needy, let the Lord be mindful of me; Thou art my help and my deliverer; do not delay, O my God.

Ps 54:4 Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is the sustainer of my soul.

Excellence is of God alone.

Ec 7:20 Indeed, there is not a righteous man on earth who continually does good and who never sins.

Isa 12:5 Praise the LORD in song, for He has done excellent things; let this be known throughout the earth.

God wants us to live the life He has given us, to follow the plan He has set for us and to exude confidence in His work.  Then, humble hearts will cause us to be thankful for who we are, Who God is and what He has done.  Our heart, our dreams, and our confidence is complete in Christ.  100% guaranteed, irresistible and perfect satisfaction!

Responsibilities that seem overwhelming will cause us to grow in trust rather than run into the world’s quick and temporary solutions.  Our identity, fulfillment and hope will be supported in God’s flawless plan rather than our weak efforts.   Our hope for the future will be wrapped up in God’s perfect design. There is no chance of man’s sin ruining God’s purpose.  He will use everything for His glory. This is true success.

Complete Dependence – Absolute Confidence – Redeemed Hearts – Rescued Dreams – Perfect Trust.

Grocery Carts and Special Gifts

I can’t explain all of this, but by His grace, I knew, I understood. I wasn’t alone. I never had been. We treasure the gifts that are most precious to us.

We remember the most significant times in our lives.  Sometimes with such clarity that we are able to picture exactly where we were and who was present.  Memories can be so strong that even our senses and emotions of a particular event instantly flood back into our consciousness just as if we were there again.  Perhaps you can recall several of these times in your life over the years.

A few memories come to my mind.  The first time I took my three young children to the grocery store. By myself. It seems like a funny thing to have a strong memory of but I can see it in my mind like it was yesterday.  I know where I parked the van, I remember the market I went to and the nervousness I felt wondering how I was going to get a newborn, a two year old and a six year old to the store and back with groceries.  Another memory I have is of a particular Christmas morning. My family always had what we needed but not much extra. I was only about six years old and I desperately wanted a specific baby doll and also a mini playhouse with little mouse characters one year.  It would be very unusual to receive both gifts so I was set on being happy for whichever one ended up under the tree.  I remember being totally surprised – to the point of tears – upon receiving both of my desires.

The gift I received when God unveiled my eyes to His truth is by far the most significant event in my life.  I can remember it like it was yesterday.  I know the room I was in, I can feel the emotions.  An overwhelming sense of relief and peace flooded my mind as I recall giving up my way for God’s direction.  I remember the immediate release of burdens I had unnecessarily placed on my shoulders.  Circumstances that were too heavy for me to carry were given to God.  I can’t explain all of this, but by His grace, I knew, I understood.  I wasn’t alone.  I never had been.  We treasure the gifts that are most precious to us.

The gift of salvation is special because of its significance.  There is simply no other gift that is able to change your life completely in the present or for eternity!

What marks its significance?

It is Spectacular in its effects on the heart.

De 30:6 "Moreover the LORD your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants, to love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, in order that you may live.

Eze 11:19 "And I shall give them one heart, and shall put a new spirit within them. And I shall take the heart of stone out of their flesh and give them a heart of flesh,

Do you know of anything else that has such an outstanding, dramatic and real response as a heart that has been miraculously changed from within?

The spectacular effects on a saved soul is undeniable.  No one is able to refute the change that took place in my heart when God opened my eyes to His truth.

It is Striking in its ability to direct attention to God.

2Co 7:10 For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation; but the sorrow of the world produces death.

2Ti 1:9 [God] who has saved us, and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was granted us in Christ Jesus from all eternity,

Ac 4:12 "And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men, by which we must be saved."

Isa 45:22 "Turn to Me, and be saved, all the ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other.

God used circumstances to direct my full attention towards His truth.  One moment I was focused on what I needed to do, then through His grace, I was directed towards what He had already done for me.

It is Sensational in its strength.

1Co 1:18 For the word of the cross is to those who are perishing foolishness, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

Ro 8:3 For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God [did:] sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and [as an offering] for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh,

Heb 4:12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

1Co 15:54 But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, "DEATH IS SWALLOWED UP in victory. 55 "O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR VICTORY? O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR STING?"

Ro 5:9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.

Isa 12:2 "Behold, God is my salvation, I will trust and not be afraid; for the LORD GOD is my strength and song, and He has become my salvation."

Following rules and regulations set by man’s wisdom only changes the outside appearance.  We learn to concentrate on what things look like.  I thought I was okay because I looked good to myself and others on the outside.  God’s Truth cuts through to the soul, exposing the need we have for Him.  I know of nothing or no one who is able to read my heart perfectly – except God.

It Shines from its source of Glory.

2Co 4:6 For God, who said, "Light shall shine out of darkness," is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

Heb 1:3 And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high;

Ps 93:1 The LORD reigns, He is clothed with majesty; The LORD has clothed and girded Himself with strength; Indeed, the world is firmly established, it will not be moved.

Ps 104:1 Bless the LORD, O my soul! O LORD my God, Thou art very great; Thou art clothed with splendor and majesty,

God is light.  In Him there is no darkness.  He alone is worthy of praise and honor and glory.  He has chosen to touch His children with the gift of salvation that none other can give.  The Spectacular, Striking, Sensational, Shining gift of Salvation.  Have you unwrapped His gift?

The Perfect Gift – Psalm 119:130

Psalm 119:130

C:\Users\Sharyn\Desktop\unwrapped.jpg

Think of unwrapping a present.  Most children dig right in, ripping paper off or pulling tissue out of a bag as fast as they can. Often the contents are revealed without notice and they are ready to dive into another present! Adults usually take a little more time, perhaps not wanting to seem too eager about their gift but filled with anticipation at the thought of something special.  My Mom would meticulously remove the paper from a present and carefully refold the wrapping to be used again.  Or, in the case of a gift bag, she would smooth out each individual piece of tissue paper then methodically fold it into squares before looking inside to discover her present.  This seemed especially painful to watch at times because the giver was often as excited as the receiver!   But she wanted to revel in the moment. Psalm 119:130 talks about “the unfolding of God’s words”.

Ps 119:130 The unfolding of Thy words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.

unfolding <pethach> opening, disclosure: entrance.

Unfolding something means to open it to view, revealing what is inside.  The “entrance” of God’s words (KJV) is to move into His truths.  Notice there is action involved.  This is not just the act of physically opening the Bible, it is opening our hearts to accept the truths of the Gospel.  Fact:  Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth and the Light. There is no understanding apart from His death on the cross for our sin. John 3:16; John 3:36; John 6:40; Romans 10:9-11.

We read that “the unfolding of Thy words gives light”.

light <’owr> make luminous (as in the break of day); glorious, kindle, set on fire, shine.

Being luminous is to emit or reflect light.  Think of the morning dawn as the first light of day swallows the darkness of night.  The light of God’s words are not just any ordinary light.  The words glorious, grandeur, splendor, brilliant, magnificent and even splendiferous – yes, that is a word – are a good description of the light emitted from God’s words.

Pr 6:23 For the commandment is a lamp, and the teaching is light; and reproofs for discipline are the way of life,

Ps 19:8 The precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.

Ps 119:105 Thy word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path.

Do you have a beautiful picture in your mind?  Hold onto it and use it to paint the beautiful picture of Truth contained in scripture!  It is an incredible, indescribable gift we have at our fingertips.  Do you open God’s word with the anticipation of wonderful discovery?  Do you hastily unwrap it without really seeing what is inside?  Are you excited about it but afraid to let others know?  Do you meticulously examine each treasure that it contains taking time to carefully discover and digest all God has for you?

The Strong’s Hebrew definition of light includes the words kindle and set on fire.  Kindling stirs up a response.  You can kindle a fire to set logs aflame.  With words you can kindle or evoke a response of emotions or feelings that lead to action.  God’s word sets our soul on fire to shine for Him.

What is the opposite of light – darkness, being blind to the Truth.

2Co 4:4 in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

2Co 4:6 For God, who said, "Light shall shine out of darkness," is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

Eph 5:13-14 But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light. For this reason it says, "Awake, sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you."

It gives understanding

Think of the adage that says you never really understand something until you can explain it to someone else.  What does it take to understand something?

understanding <biyn> to separate mentally (or distinguish); to attend, consider, be cunning, diligently, direct, discern, eloquent, feel, inform, instruct, have intelligence, know, look well to, mark, perceive, be prudent, regard, skill, teach, think, deal wisely.

Wow, read the above words again.  So much meaning is contained in this one concept.  Understanding takes time!!  It takes diligent effort and discernment!

I’ve had others share with me that preparing multiple studies from God’s word takes too much time.  It is difficult and most people won’t want to invest that much.  That it is hard and the effort needed is not something others will want to embark upon.  It’s been suggested that there is a limited amount of time that people are willing to sit and listen or study the word of God because our attention wanes.  I would propose these questions to those concerns:

Who does your time belong to?  What has been done for you to secure salvation?  Are you able to sit through an hour and a half movie and pay attention?

It pains my heart when it seems we are only willing to sacrifice a piece of our life for God.  We feel accomplished when we read a verse for the day.  We have claimed time as our own instead of recognizing Who it truly belongs to.  Familiar words to a song are “All I have is Christ.  Jesus is my life”.  Is this what we live?  Or is it more like “Christ is part of what I have.  Jesus is a piece of my life”?

To have understanding means we are able to see God’s truth.  We recognize His ways and the difference between fact and error.  How do we acquire understanding of His words?  We enter or unfold scripture with a desire to know God more.  Understanding of His words is God’s work.  Are you a willing vessel?

Who does God give understanding to?  The simple!  This is especially great news for someone like me who has little formal higher education   I don’t have to be especially smart or creative.  No letters of degree completion after my name.  This truth also begs the answer to the concern that it is too hard to understand God’s word.

simple <pethiy> silly, foolish

Our English definition for the word simple means having few parts; not complex, complicated or involved.  Childlike simplicity and trust.  Think wide-eyed, looking at something with eyes full of wonder.

Isn’t this a beautiful and encouraging picture!  The only prerequisite for understanding God’s words is to come to Him with a sincere desire to know Him.  He causes us to change, He causes us to understand.

Ps 19:7 The law of the LORD is perfect, restoring the soul; the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.

In the beginning of the book of Proverbs we read why God’s words are written:

Pr 1:2-4 To know wisdom and instruction, to discern the sayings of understanding, 3 To receive instruction in wise behavior, righteousness, justice and equity; 4 To give prudence to the naive, to the youth knowledge and discretion,

A statement in the Geneva Bible Notes is pretty straight-forward in the rendering of this verse:

“The simple idiots that submit themselves to God have their eyes opened and their minds illuminated, as soon as they begin to read God’s word”.

“when I open my Bible to read, light springs up in my mind. Every sermon, every prayer, every act of faith, is an opening by which light is let into the seeking soul.”  Adam Clarke’s Commentary

“There is so clear a light in thy word, O God, that, upon the first sight thereof, it gives great knowledge and comfort to the beholder.”  Hall’s Explication of Hard Texts

Lu 24:27;31 And beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures. 31 And their eyes were opened and they recognized Him;

Read one of my favorite verses; my prayer for myself and the dear sweet individuals God has placed in my life:

Eph 1:18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,

[Blessed be the Lord God of Israel] who gives to His people the knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God, with which the Sunrise from on high shall visit us, TO SHINE UPON THOSE WHO SIT IN DARKNESS AND THE SHADOW OF DEATH, to guide our feet into the way of peace."  Luke 1:77-79

“The words of God  enter the soul, when, being read or heard, they are understood, believed, stored up in the memory, and used to regulate the judgment and conduct. They then give a satisfactory light to the mind upon every subject on which they treat, and speedily communicate more useful knowledge upon the most important topics to the simplest believer, then the acutest philosophers have been able to develop through successive generations. ‘The simple idiots that submit themselves to God have their eyes opened, and their minds illuminated, so soon as they begin to read God’s word.—Thus will the scriptures give to the simple, in a few days, an understanding in those matters which philosophers for centuries sought in vain.’”—Bp Horne.

Joh 8:12 Again therefore Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world; he who follows Me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the light of life."

God’s word is the light that guides us; it is the light that teaches us in the ways we should go; it is the light that directs us to His glory.  We have been given a most precious gift – God’s written word to His children.  This gift needs to be opened frequently and when it is, our minds are filled with the light of understanding more about who God is, what He did and does, what He wants from us, and how we are to serve Him and others.  You’ve heard of a gift that keeps on giving, what an accurate description of the Bible.  Those who don’t know God hear the word with ears alone and it seems to have little value, it’s meaning evasive.  But, to those He has called, His word penetrates into our soul and the value is immeasurable.  God’s word is not exclusive to the highly educated or brilliant mind, the self-sufficient or the proudly successful.  It is for those who recognize their weakness, their deficiencies, and their need of the Savior.

Shine bright my friend for the God who has chosen you as His beloved child.  Revel in the unfolding of His words.  Thoroughly examine the gift of truths written for His children.  Be marveled at its priceless content over and over again.

Make Lemonade

There is a saying: When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. How about adding to that? When life gives you lemons, make lemonade and dwell on God’s Truth – then you will be refreshed both inside and out!

You know how you suggest to others different Bible verses to help with whatever circumstances they are facing?  Usually, those scriptures stick in our mind because they have been instrumental in our own lives.

One of my favorite sections of scripture is familiar to most believers. It begins in Philippians Chapter 4 verse 6.  “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.  7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, shall guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus”.  To be anxious means to be disquieted, to be worried or nervous or uneasy.  We are commanded to not be troubled by anything at all! Easier said than done, right?  Instead of being worried we are to earnestly pray, presenting our requests to God.  The result promised, when this is done, is peace – the opposite of a disquieted spirit – a quiet, restful, serenity of mind.  These two verses go on to say that we cannot even begin to understand how peace can enter into our troubled hearts but, when we obey and act according to God’s word, it does and the result is a heart and mind that is protected in Christ Jesus.

The first time I truly studied this scripture in a pen-to-the-paper practical mode, I was in California and my son and his wife lived across the country. My young daughter-in-law was found to have an extremely large tumor which would require immediate and extensive surgery, followed by a long recovery and the question of whether pregnancy would ever be possible.  It’s in those times especially that you feel the distance of miles that separate you from loved ones.  I was unable to sleep and was beginning to feel a bit overwhelmed by circumstances.  It’s so cool how God uses His word to direct us to the place He wants us. I was led to Philippians 4 and when I carefully read verse eight, God showed me clearly there was a very practical exercise that would direct my thoughts to a place of rest.  This was the first time I took out my notebook and physically wrote a list according to the categories in Phil 4:8:   (I’ve done this several times since.)

“Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, let your mind dwell on these things.”

After completing my list of all that was absolute truth, the facts; all that was honest and honorable; all that was just and pure and acceptable; and so forth, in connection with my son and his wife and the challenge they were facing, I had so much to ponder of God’s grace in their lives that my heart was put at rest once again.

There is a saying: When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.  How about adding to that?  When life gives you lemons, make lemonade and dwell on God’s Truth – then you will be refreshed both inside and out!   Dwelling on Truth – an incredible, practical remedy for discouragement.  Sometimes life can seem overwhelmingly complicated, confusing, unfair and downright depressing.

Have you been in a place where you’ve almost had to physically will yourself to remain hopeful and joyful in the things that were true and honest and good so that the things that were unfair and dishonest and bad were unable to find a dwelling place in your heart?  God understands and He offers His Divine direction.

Once again, in Philippians 4:9, God promises his peace with us as we seek to follow Him.

Php 4:9 The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things; and the God of peace shall be with you.

When tears are at the surface, when the words don’t come, when you are tired and feel like giving up, or you don’t know which way to turn, focus heavenward.  God’s prescription for healing has already been written.

Great H O P E

I sincerely desire to be a witness for God of His truth and majesty and love and forgiveness. I make no claim to knowing everything, much less anything, but I do strongly believe that God can work in a willing heart that is yielded to Him and that that is all He needs.

I just read a sign that says “Great hope comes from faith in God”. So true, but exactly what is hope?

We say things like, “I hope it’s warm today”. Or, “I hope I get sleep tonight” and “I hope we’re having spaghetti for dinner”. You could probably fill in a number of other familiar phrases following this same pattern. I remember thinking that I hoped I had passed a test in school. Sometimes, while playing around with a new recipe, I hope it turns out good, or at least eatable! Have you ever hoped that the jeans you love will not be too snug after finding out they were washed and dried on a warm cycle?

Certainly, hope is optimistic. But used in the above examples, the intent has only a possibility of fulfilment. We can have hopeful feelings that some kind of goal would be met. We can be hopeful for the direction our older children are taking, or hopeful that escrow closes on time. We hope medical personnel will be able to decipher our ailments. On and on….

The word hope, when attached to God is different than just having a good feeling that something will turn out well. Hope placed in the Truth is certain, it is to be counted on. It has no question mark at its end. Hope is fulfilled in Jesus’ work on the cross.

I have not attained any degrees in language study. Definitely no formal education in Hebrew or Greek. I have used a Strong’s concordance almost daily for a number of years and a combination of different Bible translations and an English dictionary along with the Treasury of Scripture Knowledge and multiple commentaries and Bible dictionaries. My main resource is the Bible with related scriptures interpreting one another and prayer, lots and lots of prayer. And direction, wisdom and advice from my beloved God-fearing husband who is always excited to read my next study. (Kudos to God – thank you for this incredible gift of my husband.) I sincerely desire to be a witness for God of His truth and majesty and love and forgiveness. I make no claim to knowing everything, much less anything, but I do strongly believe that God can work in a willing heart that is yielded to Him and that that is all He needs.

The first retreat I spoke at, I remember being ridiculously scared, nervous and needing to use the restroom several times – sorry for the descriptiveness. But, some of you understand. The scripture I was lead to was in Exodus, go figure! Not necessarily a book we spend the most time in. But somehow, (God’s direction), I landed in Exodus 4:10. It says: Then Moses said to the LORD, “Please, Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither recently nor in time past, nor since Thou hast spoken to Thy servant; for I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.” I remember reading this and thinking yep, that’s me. But then I continued to read… Ex 4:11 And the LORD said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes [him] dumb or deaf, or seeing or blind? Is it not I, the LORD? Ex 4:12 “Now then go, and I, even I, will be with your mouth, and teach you what you are to say.” Moses questioned God again and God was angered towards him. I was immediately embarrassed that I had put myself in a place where somehow I thought I had to figure out what to say about God. He’s already said it, I’m just following His lead and relaying the info!  And, He doesn’t need me for anything.  But, if I trust Him, He will use me for His purpose.  God will use whomever He chooses in whatever way He chooses. Who am I to question His direction?

So, I write and share my studies and thoughts as His servant. Please read my words as what God has placed on my heart through study and prayer and then sit down with our Lord and Savior and ask Him to reveal His truths to your heart and circumstance.

It’s not difficult to see the repetition of words in the above definitions. There is an emphasis on confidence, trust and expectations along with patience. Let’s consider a definition of hope that combines these emphases.

Hope.  To patiently and confidently trust in the expected result.
What is our hope based on? What makes the hope we have in Christ so definitive compared to the hope we speak of in the world?
The Gospel.
Hope we have in the world is uncertain. The hope we have in the gospel is assured. I like working with acronyms because my brain remembers association.

He. God. Christ Jesus. Who is He?
God is love (1 John 4:8,16); eternal, immortal, invisible, the only (1 Tim 1:17); great (Ps 145:3); Creator of the ends of the earth (Isa 40:28); God’s wisdom, knowledge and judgments are unsearchable. (Ro 11:33); God has unlimited power (Gen 17:1); knows and understands all things (Ps 139:1-6; Pr 5:21); is always present everywhere (Ps 139:7); does not change (Ps 102:26-27; Ja 1:17); is majestic (Ex 15:11; Ps 145:5); is most high (Ac 7:48); is perfect (Mat 5:48); is holy (Ps 99:9); is just (De 32:4); is the true God (Jer 10:10); is upright (Ps 25:8; Ps 92:15); is righteous (Ezr 9:15; Ps 145:17); is good (Ps 119:65); is gracious and merciful (Ex 34:6-7); is faithful (1Cor 10:13); is long-suffering (Nu 14:18); jealous (Josh 24:19); compassionate (2 Ki 13:23); a consuming fire (Heb 12:29); there is none beside Him (De 4:35); none before Him (Isa 43:10); none like Him (Ex 9:14); no one good but Him alone (Mat 29:17); God fills heaven and earth (1 Ki 8:27);

Overcome. What has He overcome?
Sin. Sin is a violation of a law or a duty or moral principle according to WordWeb.  According to the Bible, sin is lawlessness.
1Jo 3:4 Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness.
Sin is of the devil.
1Jo 3:8 the one who practices sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, that He might destroy the works of the devil.
Everyone has sinned.
Ec 7:20 Indeed, there is not a righteous man on earth who continually does good and who never sins.
EXCEPT GOD – The Father, The Son, The Holy Spirit
2Co 5:21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Heb 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.
1Jo 3:5 And you know that He appeared in order to take away sins; and in Him there is no sin.
God alone can forgive sin.
Ex 34:7a who keeps lovingkindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished,
Mic 7:18 Who is a God like Thee, who pardons iniquity and passes over the rebellious act of the remnant of His possession? He does not retain His anger forever, because He delights in unchanging love.

PENALTY. What is the penalty of sin? Death: physical and spiritual.
Ro 5:12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned–
Ro 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Eph 4:18 being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart;
Jas 1:15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.

Estrangement.  Separation from God. Alienation from God.
Isa 59:1-2 Behold, the LORD’S hand is not so short that it cannot save; neither is His ear so dull that it cannot hear. 2 But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden [His] face from you, so that He does not hear.
Isa 1:15a “So when you spread out your hands [in prayer,] I will hide My eyes from you, yes, even though you multiply prayers, I will not listen.
Ps 66:18 If I regard wickedness in my heart, the Lord will not hear;
Jer 14:12 “When they fast, I am not going to listen to their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and grain offering, I am not going to accept them. Rather I am going to make an end of them by the sword, famine and pestilence.”
Mic 3:4 Then they will cry out to the LORD, but He will not answer them. Instead, He will hide His face from them at that time, because they have practiced evil deeds.

What’s the alternative to hope?

N O  H O P E.

<ya’ash> to desist, to despond, despair, one that is desperate, be no hope (Isa 57:10; Jer 2:25; Jer 18:12)

It speaks for itself.

The Perfect Shelter Ps 91:1

There is One perfect shelter that will withstand all attack. And this is pretty cool – it’s free! At least free to us. The price was significant to God.

There are shelters of many kinds. A shelter provides protection from danger and weather. There are women’s and children’s shelters, homeless shelters, tornado shelters, animal shelters, credit shelters and wilderness survival shelters.

We use an umbrella as a shelter from the rain and the sun, and there are shelters at many public transportation stops that are used while waiting for a bus or train, etc., to arrive. I’m certain that a search of this word would produce many more names of different types of shelters. Wikipedia says “Having a place of shelter, of safety and of retreat, i.e. a home, is commonly considered a fundamental physiological human need…”

Peter Menzel, a well-known international photographer and journalist, has a series of photos on his website of different houses in different countries around the world. There is a photo of a mud-walled house in the West African City of Djenne, Mali; an earth house in Shingkhey, Bhutan; round homes in South Africa; as well as Victorian cottages in Massachusetts and adobe style homes in New Mexico.

If you are interested, you can purchase a bomb shelter. One website I was lead to, suggested that anyone who wasn’t paranoid about the world’s threats should be paying more attention. There is a bomb shelter company in Texas that can provide structures that protect from nuclear, chemical, biological, EMP, war and tornadoes. Kind of a one-size-fits-all bunker. (I did have to look up what EMP stood for: it’s the electromagnetic pulse that is emitted after a nuclear attack.)

So, what’s the point?!  Shelters are important in our lives, albeit to varying degrees. I won’t be purchasing a build-it-yourself fallout shelter anytime soon. Perhaps I’m not paranoid enough yet.  For most, a place they call home is their safety. Yet, consider:  if there was total or perfect protection in a home, there would be no need to pursue or even think of the idea of additional shelter in the event of a catastrophic event.

There is One perfect shelter that will withstand all attack. And this is pretty cool – it’s free! At least free to us. The price was significant to God. Have you received His permanent protection? Are you able to take refuge in His shadow?
Continue for a study on Ps 91:1.

The Shadow of The Almighty

Think about God’s shadow. A shadow is only present when there is something real that exists to cause an area to be covered. Hence, God is present in the believer’s life. He is real. There is a nearness to God that is assumed. Those who are near to God are under His care.

Ps 91:1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
dwells <yashab> sits down, abides, continues, remains, endures, is established
shelter <cether> cover, hiding place, protection
abide <luwn> to stay permanently, continue, dwell, endure, remain
shadow <tsel> shade, defense
How can I apply this?
First, there is a relationship with The Most High, The Almighty. The Most High means elevated, the Supreme, the uppermost. The Almighty is just what is says! In WordWeb the Almighty is defined as a term referring to God; having unlimited power. Synonyms listed for Almighty are the Creator, the Divine, the Godhead, Jehovah, the Lord, and the Maker.

Then there seems to be an item of choice – taking action to dwell. Do I choose to sit down and abide with my Savior? Am I established in the Almighty God? If you look up the English meaning of dwell, one of the entries says to “spend most of one’s life in”. Such as a habitat. Am I surrounding myself in God’s precepts and the peace He provides? Or in the world’s murmurings and offerings?
When I have a relationship with God, and am careful to fill my existence with Him, then I am given a promise: I “shall abide in the shadow of the Almighty”. This is a permanent protection, one I will not lose. I have the promise of God’s defense over my life.

Consider: What greater protection can there be?
The truth and promises contained in Ps 91:1 is a truth that brings peace. It is truth we can place our trust in. Have you ever wanted to just run and perhaps hide or melt into nothingness because of difficult circumstances surrounding you? If you are trying to live a life that is pleasing to God, you will at one time or another, feel attacked. From people. You may be unfairly represented or misunderstood. Even from those you care about. What do we do when that happens? Where will you seek lasting help? Where will you find complete rest? Not in things that don’t last. Not in others who can’t understand your inner heart. But, in The Most High, The Almighty. His shadow covers you in protection. Stay there, rest. Keep the shelter He provides in good repair on your end. Spend time caring for it and getting to know it.
Ps 17:8 Keep me as the apple of the eye; hide me in the shadow of Thy wings,
Ps 27:5 For in the day of trouble He will conceal me in His tabernacle; in the secret place of His tent He will hide me; He will lift me up on a rock.
Ps 31:20 Thou dost hide them in the secret place of Thy presence from the conspiracies of man; Thou dost keep them secretly in a shelter from the strife of tongues.
Ps 119:114 Thou art my hiding place and my shield; I wait for Thy word.

God is my safety and security. In times of concern, I will put myself under His protection. I can do this because I have a relationship with Him. He alone is my defense and hope. The Most High, The Almighty knows my heart, my thoughts, and my deeds.

Think about God’s shadow. A shadow is only present when there is something real that exists to cause an area to be covered. Hence, God is present in the believer’s life. He is real. There is a nearness to God that is assumed. Those who are near to God are under His care.
Ps 91:4 He will cover you with His pinions, and under His wings you may seek refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark.

Great security is promised to those who trust in God’s name.
“It is an undoubted truth, that he who always makes the divine providence his sanctuary, and, commending himself to the protection of the most high, rests in that, and troubles himself no farther, need not fear any danger whatsoever: but think himself safe and secure in his custody; who, as he is almighty, so will never fail those that piously confide in him”. Patrick/Lowth/Whitby/Lowman Commentary
1Jo 4:15-16 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. And we have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.
Ps 36:7 How precious is Thy lovingkindness, O God! And the children of men take refuge in the shadow of Thy wings.
Where is your trust? Where do you turn for shelter?

Why?

I can’t imagine the nightmares that are being relived over and over in those who were present. I can’t imagine the fear of being in danger with nowhere to escape. I won’t pretend to understand what causes a mind to shatter and become someone who annihilates innocent people. I don’t know how to begin to comfort those who have experienced something so horrific.

ABC News: “live from the scene of the harrowing mass shooting in Las Vegas”
NBC News: “after gunman’s deadly spree, a lingering question: Why?”
FOX News: “Las Vegas shooter described as unstable”

Feelings and thoughts that are unsettling, fear-provoking, sorrow-filled, empty, perplexing, and doubting and threaten to give-up all hope, fill the mind.
How do we respond? How should we respond?

It’s difficult to know. I am unable to explain how God allows such tremendous evil and pain in the world without just doing away with all of us.

This is what I do know.  God has perfect knowledge and understanding.
Job 34:21 For His eyes are upon the ways of a man, and He sees all his steps.
Heb 4:13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.
I know that God hates sin.
Pr 15:9 The way of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD, But He loves him who pursues righteousness.
He is all-powerful.
Job 42:2 “I know that Thou canst do all things, and that no purpose of Thine can be thwarted.
It doesn’t make sense to my limited mind. But I am convinced He has a plan. I’m convinced that plan is good. He never promised us all warmth and fuzzys on earth.
Mt 16:24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.

We want to hear God is love; we aren’t so excited to hear God is just.
De 32:4 “The Rock! His work is perfect, for all His ways are just; a God of faithfulness and without injustice, righteous and upright is He.
In fact, He promised His wrath on sin.
Eph 5:6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.

I won’t begin to even try and understand how this all works. Is my thinking weak, is it a cop-out, a choice to not deal with something hard? No. I simply am unable to fully appreciate the ways of God.
Job 26:14 “Behold, these are the fringes of His ways; and how faint a word we hear of Him! But His mighty thunder, who can understand?”
Do I need a reality check? No. Is God a fairy tale? No. Sin is real, very real. Evil is real, painfully real. God is true, He is the Truth.
Joh 14:6 Jesus *said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me.

Consider: The God of the Bible cannot be a fairy tale. No man would write a story that would contain the events in the Bible. It would never be a best-seller. People don’t flock to theaters to be reminded of how much they are in need. God’s word does contain a story, but it is not trivial. It’s real. However, it is not written by human understanding.

In the beginning, God. Creation of the world and all it contains. Providing all perfection. For man. Whom He loves. Then, man’s sin, challenging his Creator. What Father would not discipline His child whom He loves? The consequence, death. But whose? The offering of His Son, Jesus Christ, the perfect atonement.
Heb 2:9 But we do see Him who has been made for a little while lower than the angels, [namely,] Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone.
Jesus willingly accepted our punishment.

God’s love for us is so far-reaching it is without human comprehension. He doesn’t ask for us to understand, just believe. Trust. Have faith.
Ac 16:31 And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you shall be saved, you and your household.”
Isa 43:10 “You are My witnesses,” declares the LORD, “And My servant whom I have chosen, in order that you may know and believe Me, and understand that I am He. Before Me there was no God formed, and there will be none after Me.

So where are we left with the recent massacre in our country? How do we help? Share what you know to be true. If you knew for certain that a massive destruction would occur, and that it would take out the people you work with, the people in your neighborhood, those in your family, your friends, acquaintances and all others in your path, would you warn them? Of course. If you truly loved them and you truly believed in the source of your information, you would.  So, are you?

Ro 10:8-9 But what does it say? “THE WORD IS NEAR YOU, IN YOUR MOUTH AND IN YOUR HEART” –that is, the word of faith which we are preaching, 9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus [as] Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved;

Even in the wake of a harrowing mass shooting, we can have peace. Let’s concentrate on what we know rather than what we can’t understand. There is hope in the promises of God. We set our hope on His future return. He will make all things right.
Ps 39:7 “And now, Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in Thee.
1Co 15:19 If we have hoped in Christ in this life only, we are of all men most to be pitied.
Ro 15:13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

To Be or Not to Be Content? That is the Question.

Find beauty in the desert.

Here’s my disclaimer. I am in no way a scholar learned Bible student. My only qualification to understanding and applying God’s word comes from His work in my life through His Holy Spirit. Therefore, what I share in this blog, in the Bible studies I help to lead, and in the retreats which I’ve had the pleasure of speaking, is from a heart that is devoted to following my Lord and Savior in all things. My efforts to understand God’s truth take me to several different resources that help my limited knowledge. I am thankful God has given me a passion to communicate His love and many avenues to express the urgent need we have for His gift of salvation.

Sometimes, I wish I had a more formal education in Biblical studies but, alas, that brings me to one of the words that has been on my heart.
Contentment – What does it mean?

Php 4:11-12 Not that I speak from want; for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need.

Let’s think opposites.
Want – Have
Content – Discontent, Dissatisfied

Are we able to change our circumstances? In many ways, yes. But do we want to or should we? We have the freedom to make many of our own choices. This is fun, it allows for individual likes and dislikes. But, think of those things that you are unable to change. For instance, I cannot change my age! A few years ago I was surprised to find out I was actually a year older than I realized – a true, albeit concerning, story that may cause you to question my mental status! I may be able to change my appearance to look younger but the numbers are what they are.

On a more serious note, many individuals are presented with physical challenges that are beyond their control. Change in these cases is not an option so management and satisfaction with the way things are becomes the normal.  Think also of the  number of people who find themselves placed in a geographical area that perhaps is not their primary choice.  But it is  a necessity because of employment or cost of living. In that case, it is well to accept where you are and be thankful for the opportunity to provide an income.

I grew up near the foothills of the San Bernardino mountain range. My teenage years were spent hiking on mountain trails just a half-hour away or driving to the beach with friends, equally as convenient. Later on, circumstances and choices led me to a different location.

I now live in the high desert. It has been my home for over thirty years.  It is hard for many people, including myself, to find the beauty in the Joshua trees, tumble weeds, dry winds, and hot summers. Yet, it grows on you. I struggle with the lack of green, beautiful tall trees, natural woods, and what many would consider to be a more idyllic setting.

When we visit the northeast coast where one of our sons lives with his family, we enjoy the beauty that surrounds us as we walk through the Pennypack Trail just a few minutes away. It has always amazed me that everything is green and there are no automatic sprinkler systems except nature!  But, there is a downside. Humidity and mosquitos!

So, what to do, if anything?  I can choose to be discontent with what I don’t have or content with what I do have. I choose to be satisfied where God has placed me. Is this always easy? Heck no! My perfect world would have all my adult children and grandchildren living within a close radius of one another. My ideal setting would be for everyone to have employment that would provide well for their families yet grant time off for getting together. My preference would be to have a guarantee that all those I love would be called by God and live for Him.

It seems humans are wired to want what they don’t have, doesn’t it?! This begins early in life. Just spend a few minutes with small children wanting the same toy – often the toy that has been neglected until another child shows interest.

If we look back to our scripture in Philippians, the concentration is on becoming satisfied with whatever we have, wherever we are and with anything God has allowed into our lives. Paul emphasizes that he has learned to be content. This sounds like a choice. A conditioned response acquired over time. The more I am aware of God and who He is, the more I can sincerely say I want His plan. Why? It’s better than mine! It’s perfect.

So I will find  beauty in the desert. When I’m missing my kids who live across the country and when I’m tired of the dry landscape surrounding me, I will thank God for the winds that provide clear blue skies. I will thank God for technology and the opportunity to FaceTime.  I will appreciate the open land that surrounds me.  The beautiful, color-filled sunsets. The occasional snow cover glistening on the Joshua trees.

Continue on for more study on contentment.

Choose Contentment over Dissatisfaction

Php 4:11-12 Not that I speak from want; for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need.
want <husteresis> a falling short, penury: want
want: deficiency, lack, need, be without
content <autarkes> self-complacent, contented
self-complacent: uncritically satisfied with oneself or one’s actions, not looking to improve
contented: satisfied with things as they are
circumstances <hos> [KJV – whatsoever state] probably a primary word;
circumstances: your overall condition in life, fate, portion, facts, setting, surroundings, context, the way something is
1Ti 6:6-8 But godliness [actually] is a means of great gain, when accompanied by contentment. 7 For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either. 8 And if we have food and covering, with these we shall be content.
Goals, dreams, desires – all these things can be good. Working towards them is good. Striving towards goals that honor God is necessary. Sometimes, paying attention to desires might even open doors that God would have us go through. Contentment is not complacency as we would define it.

Read the Apostle Paul’s words in Romans.
Ro 7:22-25 For I joyfully concur with the law of God in the inner man, 23 but I see a different law in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind, and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my members. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin.
He was certainly not okay with the presence of sin vying for attention. This led Paul to make a choice. A choice to seek God.  So how would we apply the concept, actually the command, of being content in all things? Perhaps the time I spend seeking to improve circumstances would show me where my true desires lie. Which issues are tugging at my heart for change? Do they have value in serving God?
Have you ever tried to make something happen, all the while putting effort into manipulating circumstances to match what seems respectable? Most of us would like to say no to this, yet I will run the risk of suggesting that some of us can relate to the question. Manipulation is not borne of contentment.

Contentment. Biblical contentment. God-is-in-control contentment. God-has-a-perfect-plan contentment. “Bloom where you are planted” contentment. I may have used this idiom in an earlier post but it fits.

Look at the beginning of Philippians Chapter 4. Paul longed to be with his spiritual family to encourage them (Ph 4:1). He desires unity in the church and specifically calls out individuals to hold to that standard (Ph 4:2). He requests the help of all to work together in furthering the gospel (Ph 4:3). Through all circumstances, Paul reminds everyone to rejoice in God (Ph 4:4). The Apostle encourages the church to continue to move forward in light of the Lord’s return (Ph 4:5). A warning to trust God and pray heartfelt requests to Him, with an attitude of thankfulness is offered (Ph 4:6). The truth that peace beyond understanding comes from God and will protect thoughts and feelings is recorded (Ph 4:7). A challenge to focus on truth, honor, righteousness, and purity; those things that are acceptable and reputable, the things that are excellent and praiseworthy, is issued (Ph 4:8). In fact, we are to dwell upon them.

What is the effect of choosing to act upon what we know to be good?                 It brings peace. Quietness. Contentment.

Php 4:9 The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things; and the God of peace shall be with you.

Fast forward to Philippians 4:11:  Not that I speak from want; for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am.  The Psalmist speaks from a heart of contentment. He understands the waging of war in his soul to act opposite of what God wants. Yet, he chooses contentment. He has learned contentment. He understands the importance of contentment.

Consider: Continually striving to improve our personal circumstances must steal time from current opportunities.  I often need to take an honest look at my priorities and what is driving me.  Contentment in all things allows a notable use of time and energy towards growing God’s family on earth which translates to His kingdom in heaven.

Consider: Discontent can be a byproduct of having too much or too little. Those who think that more of something will solve their concerns will never have enough no matter how much they’ve been given. The true problem lies in a heart of dissatisfaction. Those who think that less of something will solve their concerns will always place blame on the circumstances allowed in their lives. Think less responsibility, less family difficulties, less financial troubles, less physical ailments, less people complaining or demanding. The true problem lies in a heart unwilling to accept God’s plan.

Consider: The art of contentment begins with our view of God, and our realized need of His work in our lives.  Somehow, a right perspective dims our own desires and puts God-honoring activities first on our radar.

Ac 4:12 “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men, by which we must be saved.”
Php 4:13 I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.
God wants us to find fullness in Him. There are no circumstances too high or too low, too out-of-control or too mundane, too impossible or unimaginable for God. Stay close to God and He will be your source of contentment.
Joh 15:5 “I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me, and I in him, he bears much fruit; for apart from Me you can do nothing.
2Co 12:9 And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may dwell in me.

Choose Contentment – the opposite will leave you dissatisfied.

Esteem the Sword Ps 119:129

The word esteem bears the meaning of being honored. The ideas or persons you hold in high regard often bring feelings of delight or approval. So much so that there is a desire to emulate them.

King Edward the Sixth, on the day of his coronation, had presented before him three swords, signifying that he was monarch of three kingdoms. The king said, there was one sword wanting; being asked what that was, he answered, “The Holy Bible, which is the sword of the Spirit, and is to be preferred before these ensigns of royalty.” Thomas Watson, in “The Morning Exercises”

Ps 119:129 Thy testimonies are wonderful; therefore my soul observes them.

wonderful <pele’> a miracle, marvelous thing, wonder (Strong’s Concordance)
wonderful: extraordinarily good or great; syn. tremendous (WordWeb)

The Psalmist gives us an emphatic statement about God’s testimony or witness – His word. Then he follows up with his active response to this truth. The things that really impact us cause a reaction or change.

We can say we esteem someone or something but words alone are empty without action. For example, we can say it’s important to serve without lifting a finger or without a willingness to sacrifice. You then need to ask yourself, do you truly believe this statement. We typically follow through with the things we value most. We make the time to do so. We set priorities that include those most admired things or people in our lives.

Thoughtfully consider the last 24 hours of your time. What does it reflect?

Breathe – Ps 119:129

Ps 119:129 Thy testimonies are wonderful; therefore my soul observes them.

Wonderful – In regard of the deep mysteries, the most excellent directions, and the exceeding great and precious promises of God contained in them. John Wesley’s Notes

Because Your testimonies are wonderful, I will keep them.

soul <nephesh> all of me, the very breath of me
keep <natsar> guard, protect, observe

Notice the word soul means every fiber of your being. This is so much more than mere acknowledgement with words. Do we try to live God’s word? All the time? Even when it’s exceedingly difficult to stand apart from the crowd? Even when it may mean the loss of a relationship? Do we breathe God’s word?
Revisit the words to the familiar song ‘Breathe’ by Marie Barnett: This is the air I breathe. Your holy presence living in me. This is my daily bread. Your very word spoken to me. And I’m desperate for You. And I’m lost without You.

While [I] live will I praise the LORD. George Carpenter, the Bavarian martyr, being desired by some godly brethren, that when he was burning in the fire he would give them some sign of his constancy, answered, “Let this be a sure sign unto you of my faith and perseverance in the truth, that so long as I am able to hold open my mouth, or to whisper, I will never cease to praise God, and to profess his truth”; the which also he did, saith mine author; and so did many other martyrs besides. –John Trapp.

The things that are truly wonderful to us we desire to be a part of. Keeping God’s word means we guard it. Are you able to defend His word? To defend the Word means we need to know and understand it.  What steps are you taking to know His truths?
Consider for a moment those persons you love. How careful are you to protect their integrity? How difficult is this when their actions give a different message than their words? Acting upon what we know to be true is different than acting upon what we think or what we wish to be true.  Humans have an uncanny ability to manipulate their understanding of something to fit what they want to justify.  Let’s be careful here and hold our family in Christ accountable to a pure representation of the Lord we love.

Keeping God’s testimonies must involve action. Your actions prove your words to be sincere. They prove your love for God to be genuine. If you believe God’s testimonies are wonderful, you will follow Him with all your might. With your very soul. With each breath.
Jas 1:21-23 Therefore putting aside all filthiness and [all] that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls. 22 But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror;

Those that see God’s word to be admirable will prize it highly and preserve it carefully. Matthew Henry’s Commentary

Tertullian said, “I adore the fullness of the Scripture.” This is well, but it is better still to stand in awe of their authority, and cheerfully yield obedience to their precepts. Spurgeon Devotional Commentary

Ps 119:2 How blessed are those who observe His testimonies, who seek Him with all [their] heart.
Ps 119:18 Open my eyes, that I may behold Wonderful things from Thy law.

God’s word is miraculous!! It reveals His promises to us. It reveals His commands to us. It is perfect! In God’s word we find comfort, we find strength, we find instruction. It is unchanging, it gives us understanding.
2Ti 3:16-17 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17 that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.
Ro 15:4 For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.

[The Psalmist] Expresses his admiration of God’s testimonies, and his purpose to observe them. They are wonderful, contain astonishing discoveries of invisible things, of the mystery of God and of Christ, of the covenant of grace, of the way of godliness, and of the joys and miseries of the eternal world; therefore doth my soul keep them, locked up in my heart as the richest treasure, and with unreserved devotedness obeyed. Note, it is not commending God’s word, but doing the work it enjoins, which can show our real esteem for it. Haweis

What is the wonder of God’s word?

God’s word reveals His commands and promises. God’s word allows His followers to know something about Him. God’s word causes His children to be amazed at who He is. His truth continues to draw us into admiration for His person, His work, His righteousness and His plan.

God’s word has the power to guide us through life on earth in a manner pleasing to Him, and into life eternal where we will be in His presence.

1Ki 2:3 “And keep the charge of the LORD your God, to walk in His ways, to keep His statutes, His commandments, His ordinances, and His testimonies, according to what is written in the law of Moses, that you may succeed in all that you do and wherever you turn,
Jas 1:12 Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.

God’s testimonies are free from error.
Ps 18:30 As for God, His way is blameless; the word of the LORD is tried; He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him.

God’s testimonies give instruction; they strengthen and comfort.
2Ti 3:16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness;
Ro 15:4 For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
Isa 40:31 Yet those who wait for the LORD will gain new strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not get tired, they will walk and not become weary.
Ex 15:2 “The LORD is my strength and song, and He has become my salvation; this is my God, and I will praise Him; my father’s God, and I will extol Him.
God’s testimonies humble men; they transform men.
Ro 12:3 For through the grace given to me I say to every man among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith.
Jas 1:21 Therefore putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls.

God’s word gives us hope; it gives us direction.
1Pe 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
Ps 73:24 With Thy counsel Thou wilt guide me, and afterward receive me to glory.
Ps 32:8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go; I will counsel you with My eye upon you.

God’s word is eternal.
Joh 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
(There are many more characteristics of God’s Word that are wonderful – too many to mention in this study.)

Robert King of Sicily did so prize God’s word, that, speaking to his friend Petrarcha, he said, “I protest, the Scriptures are dearer to me than my kingdom; and if I must be deprived of one of them, I had rather lose my diadem than the Scriptures.” Thomas Watson, in “The Morning Exercises”

As a child, I grew up in a small suburb just north of Los Angeles, California. Often, I remember my lungs hurting when I took a deep breath of the smog-filled air. It was not unusual to see a grayish film lingering in the sky from pollution.

The word ‘smog’ comes from a combination of the words smoke and fog. It is made up of nitrogen oxides, Sulphur oxides, ozone, smoke and carbon monoxide. (Information taken from Wikipedia).

This was so common at that time that when someone said, ‘I have smog’, people knew what you meant. It meant your lungs hurt from breathing the heavily polluted air. Sometimes the air was thick with contamination harmful to humans. But, what to do, there was no choice, you had to breathe! On particularly heavy smog days, we stayed inside.

Breathing is a necessary part of life. Physically, we must have air to fill our lungs. With no inhaling and exhaling of air, we cannot live. Spiritually, we must have God filling our lives. Without the intake of His truths through His words, our souls will be deprived of what is necessary to grow and thrive as His children. We may not be able to do much to change the quality of air we breathe on this earth, but we can choose the quality of the atmosphere we allow in our souls.

Breathe deeply of God’s testimonies. Act upon what He reveals to you. Breathing polluted air from the world will contaminate truth. Pure, gentle winds from God will energize you to work on His behalf and fill you with Truth.

Big Match Tonight: Cerebral vs. Emotion. Don’t miss this!

Truth: because we are weak, we are unable to respond perfectly and accurately in regards to our feelings. So while emotions have a part in our lives, it is better to act upon knowledge – the facts we possess to be true and right and honest and holy.

The gloves are laced, the sounding bell rings and the fight of the year begins! In one corner, we have Cerebral. Solid and calculated in his reactions.  In the opposite corner we have Emotion. Quick, yet sporadic and abrupt in his thinking and judgment. The first to make a move is Emotion. He shows aggression yet he is ineffective. As he throws a punch into his opponent without thinking, Cerebral places a careful aim to Emotion’s foolhardiness. The punch hits its mark! Cerebral is clearly in control of his action. Emotion is instantly down wondering what happened. The judges’ unanimous decision declares Cerebral the winner. Here’s the news headline: While Emotion was quick to react first, the careful knowledge applied by Cerebral proves to be no match!

Several days ago, the word-of–the-day on dictionary.com was cerebral. Interesting word isn’t it? The definition given is, “involving intelligence rather than emotions or instinct”. The listed synonym for cerebral is intellectual. I was immediately reminded how important it is to approach life circumstances with knowledge and intelligence rather than with feelings and emotions.

The church I attend is largely made up of ‘cerebral’ thinkers! This is because aerospace is a main employment venue in our valley. Think problem solvers and fact collectors; using known results and developing new statistics. The outcome of this approach is carefully planned testing of ideas. Knowledge and intelligence applied, effects outcome that can be repeated. This way of thinking is void of emotional experience.  It has to be in order to prove comparable data.

Consider.  Gather a few dozen people in a room. Present the same scenario to each. Then, without ground rules or written data, ask how each might react to the circumstance layed out before them. This is like asking a few dozen people what they think about something!!  Avoid it, plain and simple.  Why?  It leads to confusion.  However, do the same thing with a list of facts and proven results and the answers will have more commonality.  This is because the basis for the reaction is built more upon proven results and knowledge than emotion.

Should we then be void of feelings? Are emotions bad?

I sure hope not! I love the wonderful feeling of my grandchildren holding my hand or wanting to snuggle.  I am happy when they walk in the door and run to me calling my name ready to give me a hug!  We’re talking downright warm fuzzy in the heart feelings!  I treasure the compassionate hug from my husband at the end of a long, trying day.  I seek the touch of comfort from a friend when I’m hurt or sad.

So am I contradicting myself?  I don’t think so.  God gave us feelings and emotions so there must be a place for them.  God shows His feelings towards different circumstances.  Jesus, on earth as the perfect man/God, felt emotion. The shortest verse in the Bible says “Jesus wept” (John 11:35).  Jesus shed tears. That’s emotion.  Strong feelings from those who followed God are also recorded in the Bible.

God is love. He is the personification of love. The originator of love.  Love, <agape>, is an affection.  To have affection for someone is to have a positive feeling of liking for them, to have a fondness for them, tenderness, warm-heartedness.  The Gospel is based on God’s love.  God’s perfect love.

Joh 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life”.

We read in the Bible that God is love but He also showed anger.  WordWeb characterizes anger as a strong emotion.

2Ch 28:9 But a prophet of the LORD was there, whose name was Oded; and he went out to meet the army which came to Samaria and said to them, “Behold, because the LORD, the God of your fathers, was angry with Judah, He has delivered them into your hand, and you have slain them in a rage which has even reached heaven”.  God caused the slaying of thousands because they were acting in ways against Him. This is a display of His perfect righteousness.

What’s the difference between our response to emotions and God’s actions towards emotions?

Perfection.  Job 5:2 says, “For vexation slays the foolish man, and anger kills the simple”.  Man is both foolish and simple in comparison to God.  Not many of us would deny that. The foolish man is destroyed by anger because it is rooted in a depraved soul.  The foolish man is led away in lust when presented with feelings of love unhindered by intelligence.  The foolish man is devoid of good sense or judgment. The simple man is child-like. Not in an innocent sort of way, but rather, in lacking the mental capacity to see things clearly. He acts or responds before thinking upon or considering the consequences.

What can we say then? Perhaps it is not the actual feelings or emotions we have that are bad, but how we act upon those emotions.  It’s what we do with emotions.  How much credence do we give our feelings?

Truth: because we are weak, we are unable to respond perfectly and accurately in regards to our feelings.  So while emotions have a part in our lives,  it is better to act upon knowledge – the facts we possess to be true and right and honest and holy.

Largely, action driven by emotion is immediate.  Action driven by knowledge takes time to sort through  facts,  consider details and seek wise counsel.

People get angry.  Anger in man often causes one to hold a grudge against another. Anger in the wrong hands of flawed judgment leads to nothing good.
Ps 55:1-3  Give ear to my prayer, O God; and do not hide Thyself from my supplication. 2 Give heed to me, and answer me; I am restless in my complaint and am surely distracted, 3 Because of the voice of the enemy, because of the pressure of the wicked; for they bring down trouble upon me, and in anger they bear a grudge against me.
Ps 37:8 Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; do not fret, it leads only to evildoing.
On the flip side, perfect righteousness leads to perfect anger and judgment. Only God qualifies perfection.
Mt 5:48 “Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Ro 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

We are to attain to God’s perfection, strive towards it. To do this, we must follow His example.  It is necessary to adhere to what He says.  We are to look to His word in all things, including the handling of emotion and feelings.  We should strive to become more cerebral in regards to our actions and responses.

Jas 1:25 But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the [law] of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man shall be blessed in what he does.

Which gloves will you lace up and wear? The ones marked Cerebral or Emotion?

Focus Heavenward

Flash back to the spring of 1998. My first child was accepted into a college he had applied to. This was great news and this was not so great news as felt by a mother’s heart. This university happened to be located almost fifteen hundred miles away from home! Think the late 1990’s, before FaceTime was available to the general public. Keeping in touch was done by phone, email or snail mail. There was no snap chat or instant messaging, and pushing a “purchase” button on an Amazon shopping icon wasn’t familiar, if it even existed. We had cell phones but compared to the devices we have now, they were pretty slim in their options (however, not in their size!! They looked like big black walkie talkies with antennas, and forget fitting a phone into your jeans pocket!). Everyone we knew had land lines as their main phone connection.

I plastered a smile on my face to hide the hole in my heart and helped our son get ready for the grand adventure ahead of him. We decided to make the trip into a vacation for all of us. The traveling provided some good together time before the makeup of our family, as we knew it, changed forever.

We gave our son several prepaid phone cards, and after we helped settle him into his dorm room, we said good-bye. There is something about that first child moving out that brutally reminds parents that this person they had nurtured from birth until now, had always belonged to God. It’s something you know and fully accept and even want for them but the reality hits hard when you begin the long drive home with an extra seat in the van.

Ge 33:5 And he lifted his eyes and saw the women and the children, and said, “Who are these with you?” So he said, “The children whom God has graciously given your servant.”

In accordance with Scripture, everything we have belongs to God. We are stewards of His creation. This includes our children!

Any type of change disrupts our comfort. The birth of a child, the release of a child, marriage, relocation, illness, loss of a friend, and even ministry changes, serving in a different area or assuming different responsibilities. It doesn’t matter whether it’s good, bad, exciting or disturbing, chosen or forced upon. Change is difficult and scary and leaves you feeling vulnerable.

What does one do with the emotions that accompany significant change?

In the world you turn towards the things that seem to offer stability, albeit temporal. You may concentrate on the things you feel you can control. You may decide to ignore changing circumstances until the point in which they must be acknowledged.

In the believing Christian world, the effects of change are still felt but (hopefully) the reaction is different. You turn towards God for peace and assurance. You trust He is in control and will guide your direction. You pray for perspective and a response that proves you are His child. You focus heavenward.

At the time of releasing my first child I began writing via email to him, signing each letter with the reminder to keep his focus heavenward no matter what circumstances were presented. (I always drew an arrow pointing upwards as a visual.)      Focusing on God, keeping him close in heart is the one thing I knew would act as a comfort and guidance to my son. I’m not sure if that reminder did more for me or my child. But, I knew God’s plan was for good and I personally needed that constant message to keep my focus on His truth, His promises, His care and to trust in God’s ownership of my son.

How do you focus heavenward?

I had a website at that time under the name ‘Focus Heavenward’ with the statement that its purpose was to be used as a tool to look to the Bible for growth, purpose and encouragement. The site was a collection of past and present Bible studies and women’s retreats I had written over the years.

In order to focus heavenward, a direction is assumed. That direction is up. Up towards a higher position, up towards God. Up towards something that has greater value. In order to focus heavenward, faith in someone bigger than ourselves needs to have been claimed. In order to focus heavenward, a desire to give attention to someone other than ourselves is necessary. In order to focus heavenward, we need to follow the One whose established throne is in heaven.

Whenever life’s direction is significantly altered or disrupted from what is familiar, we respond in one of two ways. We fight it or we accept it. Fighting change won’t stop change, it will only make change more difficult. Accepting change as a necessary part of life will ease the paths of uncertainty.

God permits and sometimes even instructs circumstances in our lives in order to draw our eyes upward. Hanging onto God’s overwhelming love for His children, and His perfect plan and control of all things will allow us, through His grace, to focus heavenward through joyous times and even through tears.

Backwards, Downwards or Heavenward?

Where do you look when life takes a turn? Looking back will only create regret or a sense of loss. Looking down in despair will steal your joy and hope. Consider centering your attention in an upward direction towards the One who holds the highest honor and position. Keep your eyes on God who is perfect in love, perfect in truth and perfect in power. Then, even the most extreme transitions in life can be free from anxiety as you focus on truth!    May I suggest that you focus Heavenward?

Direction.

A correct direction leads to the right place. A wrong direction takes a person everywhere except the right destination. Think maps. You can click on the link bel and rea about my experience with reading maps!   Look under the heading titled, ‘Where do you go for direction’.  http://thensingsmysoultothee.com/a-certain-hope-and-a-thankful-heart/

Ex 23:20 “Behold, I am going to send an angel before you to guard you along the way, and to bring you into the place which I have prepared.
De 11:26-28 “See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse: 27 the blessing, if you listen to the commandments of the LORD your God, which I am commanding you today; 28 and the curse, if you do not listen to the commandments of the LORD your God, but turn aside from the way which I am commanding you today, by following other gods which you have not known.
Isa 48:17 Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; “I am the LORD your God, who teaches you to profit, Who leads you in the way you should go.
Joh 14:6 Jesus *said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me.

Position.

There is none higher than God. He is elevated to the most Supreme position over all things.

Ex 15:11 “Who is like Thee among the gods, O LORD? Who is like Thee, majestic in holiness, Awesome in praises, working wonders?
Ps 83:18 That they may know that Thou alone, whose name is the LORD, Art the Most High over all the earth.

In order to fully appreciate God’s position of elevation, we should look at our position. What does the Bible say about the position of man?
Man was created by God. The creator or maker of something is always higher in its position to its creation.

Re 4:11 “Worthy art Thou, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for Thou didst create all things, and because of Thy will they existed, and were created.”

God.

What is His value that would cause us to trust Him for the very people and things we love the most?
Let’s look at a few characteristics of God.

Consider: God is love. The author of love. The perfect representation of love. What better choice would there be to entrust your loved ones to the very personification of perfect love? Certainly there would be no fear for their well-being or God’s motivation.

1Jo 4:8 The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
2Co 13:11 Finally, brethren, rejoice, be made complete, be comforted, be like-minded, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.

People blow it, right?! Of course, the answer is yes! Consider this familiar saying, “If I had a dime for every time I made a poor decision, didn’t speak the entire truth (this is a nice way to call out a lie), thought poorly about someone, acted selfishly, harmed another by careless speech, etc., …….” People are corruptible. But, God is unable to be dishonest.

Consider: God is incorruptible.

He is incapable of being morally corrupted. He has no dishonest ways in Him. He is who He says He is!

Ro 1:21-23 For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God, or give thanks; but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures.

When you think closely upon the idea of being without error, perfectly honest and without the slightest spot or stain, isn’t that the One to entrust change to?

Consider: God is powerful.

What does this mean? It’s so much more than we are able to comprehend. His power is unlimited, without exception. His power will never be used up, it will not wear out, and it will not weaken with time. Isn’t this so unlike any human being? I can only speak for myself but I guarantee you my power is most always used up – that’s if I had any to begin with; I wear out much faster now that I’m pushing sixty; and I’m constantly aware of my weakness.

Job 26:12-14 “He quieted the sea with His power, And by His understanding He shattered Rahab. 13 “By His breath the heavens are cleared; His hand has pierced the fleeing serpent. 14 “Behold, these are the fringes of His ways; and how faint a word we hear of Him! But His mighty thunder, who can understand?”
Ps 62:11 Once God has spoken; twice I have heard this: that power belongs to God;
God’s power <’oz> defined in this verse means full power, strength, force, security, majesty, praise, boldness, loud, might.
The voice of the Lord thunders (Ps 29:3); the voice of the Lord breaks [destroys, crushes] the cedars (Ps 29:5); God’s hand laid the foundation of the earth and spanned the heavens (Is 48:13).

A side note: we’re talking a cedar tree here. The cedar trees of Lebanon are an upright, evergreen tree that commonly grow to be more than 130 feet in height. Are you aware of anyone who is able to break something of this magnitude? Me neither.

How do you manage change? Have you claimed faith in God? Are you able to trust in His perfect ways? Instead of looking back at what was or down with despair, focus up – Heavenward to be exact.

Identity Crisis!

Having a sense of identity is important because it allows people to stand out as individuals, develop a sense of well-being and importance, and fit in with certain groups and cultures. Why is identity so important? | Reference.com
www.reference.com/world-view/identity

Beyond the basic need for a sense of control, we are deeply driven by our sense of identity, of who we are. We are in the middle of our individual world, where we place central importance on our sense of individual self. As Descartes said, ‘I think, therefore I am.’ Many social theories are to do with creating or preserving our sense of identity. Changingminds.org

identity: the distinct personality of an individual regarded as a persisting entity; the individual characteristics by which a thing or person is recognized or known. WordWeb

With technology increasing and permeating the work place, financial markets and just about every aspect of our personal lives, identity has become a big topic. Mostly in connection with fraud and the need for protection. There are those who feel as if they’ve lost their identity in certain situations.

Several individuals we know, including ourselves, have had experiences with stolen identity within different organizations. Years ago, my husband was in the hospital for ongoing medical issues and we received a call from the admitting department that there was an inpatient using the same social security number. A few years ago, our tax return was stolen by someone who had assumed our identity and filed taxes under our social security numbers. Several years ago I received a letter from the IRS stating I owed thousands in back taxes – my name had been associated with someone else, again, an identity breech. This is real and it is unnerving.

You can purchase several different plans for identity protection. Sometimes, a company will offer protection for up to a year if the fraud has happened on their end. Of course, there are fees attached to most of these programs.

What does the future hold as technology becomes more complicated and ingrained into every area of our lives? I suppose we should take reasonable precautions and approach the possibility of identity fraud as real. However, no one can hack into my true identity.

My identity in Christ is impossible to lose once claimed. I need not fear something will be taken from me or that I would lose my representation in Christ. I did not have to purchase this identity. It was purchased for me! In Christ. By his death and resurrection. Because of His Father’s love. It is given to me as a gift. My identity in Christ is 100% foolproof. No one will steal it. Yet, they can join me in this same identity, for free. Just by accepting the gift of God’s Son.

This is a wonderful source of peace and comfort in this world of uncertainty.

Identity Crisis Solved!

Consider the following scriptures.
Ga 2:20 “I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the [life] which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and delivered Himself up for me.
2Co 5:15 and He died for all, that they who live should no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf
Ga 6:14 But may it never be that I should boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.
Php 3:7-14 But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ. 8 More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish in order that I may gain Christ, 9 and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from [the] Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which [comes] from God on the basis of faith, 10 that I may know Him, and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death; 11 in order that I may attain to the resurrection from the dead. 12 Not that I have already obtained [it], or have already become perfect, but I press on in order that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus. 13 Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of [it] yet; but one thing [I do]: forgetting what [lies] behind and reaching forward to what [lies] ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Joh 1:3 All things came into being by Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
Job 33:4 “The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
Eph 4:21-25 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus, 22 that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, 23 and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and put on the new self, which in [the likeness of] God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth. 25 Therefore, laying aside falsehood, SPEAK TRUTH, EACH ONE [of you,] WITH HIS NEIGHBOR, for we are members of one another.
Ro 12:5 so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.
Isa 64:8 But now, O LORD, Thou art our Father, we are the clay, and Thou our potter; and all of us are the work of Thy hand.
Isa 2:22 Stop regarding man, whose breath of life is in his nostrils; for why should he be esteemed?
The first statement about identity in my blog with the same name says identity is important because it gives us a sense of being an individual. So if my identity is in Christ alone, does this mean I no longer stand out as an individual?
Consider:
We are to live in holiness. A reasonable amount of thinking on this concept will lead us to realize we will stand out as individuals amongst a lost and corrupt world.
Le 11:45 ‘For I am the LORD, who brought you up from the land of Egypt, to be your God; thus you shall be holy for I am holy.'”
Ro 12:1 I urge you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.
1Pe 1:15-16 but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, “YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY.”
My life has been predestined for good works. Likewise, yours has also. These works may not be exactly the same as another. God will use each of His children for His purpose in His unique way.
Mt 5:16 “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
Eph 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Php 1:6 For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.
“For us the name to which we trace our identity is Jesus Christ. We hold up that name whenever we identify ourselves as Christians. Because Christ’s name is so honorable, it is vital that everything we do makes it shine even brighter. And that nothing we do tarnishes a single letter.” Lawrence Richards

Another factor in having an identity, as stated by Reference.Com, is it promotes the sense of well-being or importance. If my identity is in Christ alone, will I lose my sense of well-being or importance?
Consider:
Well-being is a contented state of being happy and healthy and prosperous.  WordWeb
Importance is the quality of being worthy of note, having a prominent status; grandness. WordWeb
Ps 37:16 Better is the little of the righteous Than the abundance of many wicked.
1Ti 6:6 But godliness actually is a means of great gain, when accompanied by contentment.
Heb 13:5 Let your character be free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, “I WILL NEVER DESERT YOU, NOR WILL I EVER FORSAKE YOU,”
1Ti 6:8 And if we have food and covering, with these we shall be content.
Php 4:11-12 Not that I speak from want; for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need.

Well-being includes the state of being happy, healthy and prosperous. Again, according to psychiatry, contentment leads to these things and they are a product of having an individual identity.
The above scriptures clearly say I can be content in Christ. But can I be happy? Healthy? Prosperous?
A term for happiness in the Bible is blessedness.
Ps 33:12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, The people whom He has chosen for His own inheritance.
Ps 146:5 How blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, Whose hope is in the LORD his God;
Pr 16:20 He who gives attention to the word shall find good, and blessed is he who trusts in the LORD.
God’s word brings healing. It is a deliverance from the power of sin and death.
Pr 4:22 For they [God’s words] are life to those who find them, And health to all their whole body.
Pr 3:5-8 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. 7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and turn away from evil. 8 It will be healing to your body, and refreshment to your bones.
To be prosperous in the world is to be financially comfortable. A business may be profitable as it grows. A person may be prosperous in circumstances. If our identity is in Christ alone, therefore not in our individual selves or accomplishments or worth, do we lose our chance at prosperity?
Consider:
Re 3:20 ‘Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him, and will dine with him, and he with Me.
Ge 33:11 “Please take my gift which has been brought to you, because God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have plenty.” Thus he urged him and he took it.
Ps 128:1-2 (A Song of Ascents.) How blessed is everyone who fears the LORD, who walks in His ways. When you shall eat of the fruit of your hands, you will be happy and it will be well with you.
Job 22:23-27 “If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored; If you remove unrighteousness far from your tent, and place your gold in the dust, and the gold of Ophir among the stones of the brooks, Then the Almighty will be your gold and choice silver to you. “For then you will delight in the Almighty, and lift up your face to God. “You will pray to Him, and He will hear you; and you will pay your vows.
Pr 15:6 Much wealth is in the house of the righteous, but trouble is in the income of the wicked.
Mt 6:19-21 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. “But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

There is an additional part of our definition quoted in my blog “Identity Crisis” that states having a personal identity is important in order to “fit in with certain groups and cultures”. Does this mean that having my identity solely in Christ will make it impossible to be a part of some groups and/or cultures?

Consider:
No one person is able to have any significant difference in their identity and fit in with all entities or members of a group of people. Groups are often closed whether they are meant to be or not. They are based on having things in common. For instance, a mom with three young children will often naturally navigate towards other mom’s with multiple young children. An 80 year old may not be able to keep up with the activities presented in a much younger group. On the other hand, that same group of younger families may not feel comfortable in an atmosphere where the major concern might be to keep things in place and the noise level down.

What is interesting here is that those with their identity in Christ might be more likely to cross these social barriers because they do have something in common – Christ! We cannot all be a part of everything. Our interests, concerns, families, neighborhoods, jobs, experiences and backgrounds are diversified.

Having your identity in Christ is an open door to relationships with nothing in common whatsoever except Christ. How fun is that?! I am able to have conversation and fellowship with all ages because of my identity in Christ.  With God being the common thread of interest, I am able to experience vital relationships with those who are very young (compared to myself ) and those who are much older.  I am invested in friendships with those who are single, married and widowed and divorced.  My close contacts include women who have no children and many children of all ages.  I absolutely did not enjoy this type of diversity before I knew Christ.  Instead of closing doors and losing some all-important personal identity, the salvation I have through Jesus has increased my opportunities by numbers I am unable to count.

So who am I in the middle of this big world? Have I lost my identity? By all means, a resounding NO!  Rather, I have found it! Changingminds.org says we have a basic need to be in control. Been there, done that – it’s not pretty, at least in my case.  I’d rather place control of my life in The Someone who has a perfect plan already set up for me. Years ago, the first scripture I hung onto as a personal promise was Jeremiah 29:11. These words were written to those exiled to Babylon. Leading up to verse 11, God basically says (in my words) bloom where you are planted, I have not forgotten my promises. Then we read these words: Jer 29:11 ‘For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope. God has things under control, no one is able to hack into His plan and His plan is good.

Are you having an identity crisis? Do you feel as if you’ve lost your identity to something or someone else? How would you define yourself?

There is a perfect answer to experiencing a loss of identity: thank God and go with it! Lose it completely in the One who knows you better than anyone. The One who created you as an individual with a specific purpose. The One who offers you the position of heir to His kingdom. The One who is the only source of lasting contentment and happiness; the One who provides freedom from the control of sin and provides wealth beyond measure in things that are truly important and everlasting.

Identity: “the individual characteristics by which a person is known”

Identity in Christ: an individual characterized by God’s love and so well known by Him that “the very hairs of their head are all numbered”.

Lu 12:7 “Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear; you are of more value than many sparrows.

Identity Crisis/Identity Fraud/Identity Protection
Crisis – a crucial stage or turning point in the course of something
Fraud – intentional deception; pretender; imposter
Protection – a covering intended for protection; security

Turn towards God who is perfect and therefore unable to deceive and He will protect you in His love. Identity Crisis solved!

Pencil ME in? Ps 119:132

Truth: because we are weak, we are unable to respond perfectly and accurately in regards to our feelings. So while emotions have a part in our lives, it is better to act upon knowledge – the facts we possess to be true and right and honest and holy.

A schedule. A list. A calendar. We run our days by events and timetables. Sometimes a list is handy to order things from greater importance to lesser importance. I’m a list gal, mostly because I can forget easily and realize later I missed an important date or neglected to make a necessary phone call. Schedules and lists help to keep us on task and also set time slots aside for appointments.

I used to look forward to picking out a new calendar each year which would serve as our family organizer in order to remember everyone’s activities and responsibilities. As technology has reached into all facets of our lives, my printed calendar is now replaced by the calendar on my phone.

Taking a look at someone’s scheduled days will give an idea of priorities in each 24-hour interval. Glancing at a full months’ plan shows a picture of your activities in a measured period of time.
Why am I bringing this up?  Looking at where your monetary resources are used gives an indication of priorities; viewing where your time is spent, with whom and what activities, provides a glimpse of what is valued.

Even the most important persons in our lives sometimes have to wait for an opening in our busy schedules. In times of emergency, we will quickly cross off all other engagements. But, typically, in order to get together with specific people we need to schedule them in a particular slot. We frequently ‘pencil’ in the time and hope it works.

Not so with God! At least on His part. He’s always free to meet with us, He’s even there when we might not necessarily have requested Him.  Take a closer look at Ps 119:132.

Ps 119:32. Do you use a pencil or a permanent marker?

Ps 119:132 Turn to me and be gracious to me, after Thy manner with those who love Thy name.
The first thing I think of when reading this verse is the amazing fact that I have a relationship with God in which I can even request His attention! This is so far beyond my scope of understanding. When I think of who God is and who I am, when I contemplate the fact that I can come into His presence with the confidence that He chose me, I am overwhelmed by a love far beyond my imaginations.

Something all children do at one time or another is vie for attention from those around them. Just watch them! They can quickly become over reactive physically and verbally if felt ignored or misunderstood. Think ‘tantrum, meltdown, and conniption fit’. These behaviors are all attention getters.

Here we have the Psalmist requesting that God turn towards him. David can request God’s attention with confidence. No tantrums, no pleading, no acting out to be certain God hears him. There is no gently tapping on the arm and waiting for God to finish what he’s doing before He responds to us. There is no reply from God that says, ‘just a minute, I’m in the middle of something right now’. God’s children have His full attention anytime, all the time. He is always ready to listen! Never too tired, never too busy.

Eph 3:12 in whom we have boldness and confident access through faith in Him.
Heb 10:19 Since therefore, brethren, we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus,

God showered His mercy and grace upon us in His plan for our redemption. It doesn’t end there, He continues to bless us according to His will. So not only do we have His undivided attention at all times, we can expect His continued work in our lives.

De 4:7 “For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as is the LORD our God whenever we call on Him?
Ps 65:4 How blessed is the one whom Thou dost choose, and bring near to Thee, To dwell in Thy courts. We will be satisfied with the goodness of Thy house, Thy holy temple.

The word ‘gracious’ in Psalm 119:132 comes from the translation <chanan>. The meaning is to bend or stoop in kindness to an inferior; to favor, bestow, to be merciful, and to have pity on.

Recognize David’s humility as he requests God’s favor. The Psalmist’s confidence in God doesn’t come from a prideful expectation of deserving something, but rather from dependence on God’s mercy shown towards him. He doesn’t demand God’s attention, he comes before Him asking for His compassion.

Wow! Not only can I request and expect God’s attention but also His favor! Seriously, what have I done to deserve this – nothing. I love the picture of stooping in kindness to an inferior. God chooses to bestow favor upon His children because He loves them. This love is independent of who I am or what I deserve or what I’ve done. This love is only possible because of who He is and what He’s done.

God’s children can expect His love and attention because of what He has shown in the past. He doesn’t need us to beg, He just wants us to open our eyes and ask. God’s favor towards His children is not based upon their performance.

David’s simple request is ‘turn to me’, meaning look to me, appear, regard me. He adds to this request, ‘turn to me with graciousness’. The Psalmist recognizes he is underserving of God’s attention. The Psalmist then goes on to expand his request in suggesting God turn towards him in mercy just as He has in the past towards those who love Him.

Heb 4:16 Let us therefore draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and may find grace to help in time of need.

Take a moment to think of the opposite effect of the truth in Psalm 119:132. If God’s children are to expect His mercy, what is the expectation of those who are against God?

Mal 2:2 “If you do not listen, and if you do not take it to heart to give honor to My name,” says the LORD of hosts, “then I will send the curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings; and indeed, I have cursed them already, because you are not taking it to heart.
Ps 32:10 Many are the sorrows of the wicked; but he who trusts in the LORD, lovingkindness shall surround him.
Ps 37:28 For the LORD loves justice, and does not forsake His godly ones; they are preserved forever; but the descendants of the wicked will be cut off.

Why is God’s judgement important to consider? Let’s not forget we have Good News to proclaim to those who do not know God. Instead of experiencing uncertainty they will have hope, instead of sorrow they can have joy. Are you looking for opportunities to share your confidence in the Lord?

Bottom line – If you are God’s child having accepted His gift of salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ, then God is attentive toward you and will bless you according to His unchanging character. Have confidence in this truth!

Depend on Him for protection. Ps 25:15 My eyes are continually toward the LORD, for He will pluck my feet out of the net.
Depend on Him for answered prayer. Ps 86:6 Give ear, O LORD, to my prayer; and give heed to the voice of my supplications!
Ps 102:17 He has regarded the prayer of the destitute, and has not despised their prayer.

I learned this illustration in Evangelism Explosion: having a relationship with God is like that of a beggar reaching up to receive a gift from the King.

“as it is right in regard to those who love Thy name.” Such have a right to the manifestations of God’s grace, resting on the nature of God as faithful to His promise to such, not on their own merits. Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Commentary

Ps 106:4-5 Remember me, O LORD, in Thy favor toward Thy people; visit me with Thy salvation, that I may see the prosperity of Thy chosen ones, that I may rejoice in the gladness of Thy nation, that I may glory with Thine inheritance.

I love the way Matthew Henry’s Commentary addresses this verse: ” Look graciously upon me; let me have thy smiles, and the light of thy countenance. Take cognizance of me and my affairs, and be merciful to me; let me taste the sweetness of thy mercy and receive the gifts of thy mercy.”

Reader, do you love the name of the Lord? Is his character most honorable in your sight? Most dear to your heart? This is a sure mark of grace, for no soul ever loved the Lord except as the result of love received from the Lord himself. Treasury of David

God doesn’t need a calendar to remember His children or to appoint time with them. He is omnipresent. He doesn’t need a special invitation to set aside a time slot to listen to your concerns. We may feel apart from Him but it is solely because of our own lack of priorities.

Consider your schedule again. Have you penciled God in? Perhaps it’s better to use a permanent marker and fill all your time, energy and resources with God as the priority throughout each day and within each responsibility and activity. What do you think? I’d love to hear from you!

Oh Baby!

Oh babies. Whether physically holding your hand, or having your hand held tightly in our hearts, you were and are part of God’s perfect plan. Our love for you is not diminished, only increased as we anticipate and trust the unfolding of eternity.

Praising God for the blessings of grandchildren! A sweet little guy joined the ranks of our family on September 12th. Caden Josiah. I am incredibly thankful that he and his Mommy are doing well. There is a heightened sense of the amazing miracle of birth in our family since our daughter has experienced the loss of two pregnancies: twins at just over three months and a little boy, Isaac, at four and a half months. How fragile and precious is this season of life and death. So as our daughter and her husband continue working through the grief of losing three children, our son and his wife are welcoming their second child. It’s so easy to get caught up in what might have been, or what has been lost. Yet, in order to praise God in all things, His word is our best companion for teaching right and honoring responses to all circumstances of our lives.

We cannot fully know and understand God’s ways.
God set the earth in its place (Job 26:7); God fills the clouds with water and tells them when to rain (Job 26:8); God determines the phases of the moon (Job 26:9); God sets the oceans boundaries (Job 26:10); the clouds, the sky, the stars obey His commands (Job 26:11); God’s power can divide the sea, His understanding can pierce the prideful heart (Job 26:12); God set the sun, moon and stars in place (Job 26:13);

Job 26:14 “Behold, these are the fringes of His ways; and how faint a word we hear of Him! But His mighty thunder, who can understand?”

We can barely conceive of His power so who are we to question His plan?

“God is so great, so powerful, so just and wise, that we ought not to presume to question anything that He does, nor pry into his works with too much curiosity. We ought rather to be firmly persuaded that He governs all things with wisdom, justice, and goodness, and humbly submit to all his dispensations”. Ostervald

So where does this lead us in times of heartache as well as in times of rejoicing?

Trust. Not always so simple, often easier said than done. Trust is a choice we make.

Isa 12:2 “Behold, God is my salvation, I will trust and not be afraid; for the LORD GOD is my strength and song, and He has become my salvation.”

Trust is seldom a product of understanding. Instead, it relies on a right perspective of God and faith in His existence, His works and His words.
Trust: having confidence or faith in; believing, hoping, relying upon

Is God the object of your trust?
Ps 65:5 By awesome deeds Thou dost answer us in righteousness, O God of our salvation, Thou who art the trust of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest sea;

Trusting God means we fear Him; not an ‘I’m afraid’ type of fear, but that of position. Holding God in the highest esteem, acknowledging His right to Lordship of everything, placing oneself under submission to His perfect plan for all His creation. Once recognized in our heart for Who He is, we have confidence and safety in His care.

Pr 14:26 In the fear of the LORD there is strong confidence, and his children will have refuge.
1Pe 5:7 casting all your anxiety upon Him, because He cares for you.

The Bible tells us to trust in God as our continual refuge.

Isa 26:4 “Trust in the LORD forever, for in GOD the LORD, we have an everlasting Rock.

We can trust in God for what He has done and what He will do.
2Co 1:10 who delivered us from so great a peril of death, and will deliver us, He on whom we have set our hope. And He will yet deliver us,

True faith that brings about peace requires our full commitment, our whole heart our entire being. And in order to have complete confidence, the object of our trust needs to be reliable, secure, and have a perfect track record. Consider this, if a person is dishonest about one thing, how does that affect others’ trust of them?

This begs the question, “Is there anyone or thing in this world perfect”? Who or what is able to demand this kind of trust that begs our total allegiance?

Mt 5:48 “Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

All conceivable perfection belongs to God. In fact, because we are unable to fully appreciate who God is, all imaginable and unimaginable perfection must be attributed to Him also.

Job 37:16 “Do you know about the layers of the thick clouds, the wonders of one perfect in knowledge,
Ps 18:30 As for God, His way is blameless; the word of the LORD is tried; He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him.
Ps 19:7 The law of the LORD is perfect, restoring the soul; The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.

“We must say of God likewise that he is immense, and everywhere present, because to be limited is an imperfection; and that he is eternal, that is, ever was, and shall be; for to cease to be, is a greater imperfection than sometime not to have been”. Tillotson, The Attributes of God

When we remain in sorrow for what might have been, we are supposing we knew the future. How often has the future followed your plan?
When we choose to live in the realms of grief, we suppose we have lost what was never really ours.

In all things we can trust God. He has written the past, present and future for His glory and our good. We can choose to trust in His perfect plan.

Ps 65:5 By awesome deeds Thou dost answer us in righteousness, O God of our salvation, Thou who art the trust of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest sea;
Na 1:7 The LORD is good, A stronghold in the day of trouble, And He knows those who take refuge in Him.
Ps 9:10 And those who know Thy name will put their trust in Thee; For Thou, O LORD, hast not forsaken those who seek Thee.

So how do we respond to sorrow? It is real. It is felt. It is difficult. It can become overwhelming. Sadness due to loss, disappointment, regret and grief can be overcome by faith.  Faith  is a choice – to trust in something greater than ourselves.  Faith that turns despair into hope comes from trusting in The One who is greatest of all.

Specifically, in the case of children unborn, or born without breath in them, or here for only a very short time, is it possible to look at the blessing of what we do have and of what we have been given because of God’s grace?

To have carried a child for even a short time is to have been a part in that child’s existence, if not here, in heaven. To behold a small face if only for an instant is to see a baby created in the image of God. To have felt an unborn baby move within is to experience the miracle of God’s creation of one of His own. To have heard even just one cry of breath before taken to an eternal state with God is a precious memory never to be forgotten. We can praise God for His blessings while we depend on Him for comfort.

Right now we may only understand a small fraction of God’s ultimate and perfect plan, yet one day we will be in His presence and will clearly see Him and His purpose in complete array.
1Co 13:12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I shall know fully just as I also have been fully known.

Oh babies. Whether physically holding your hand, or having your hand held tightly in our hearts, you were and are part of God’s perfect plan. Our love for you is not diminished, only increased as we anticipate and trust the unfolding of eternity.

Ps 145:3 Great is the LORD, and highly to be praised; and His greatness is unsearchable.
Our oldest granddaughter, upon hearing that her Auntie’s baby went to heaven early to be with his sibling twins, was quiet and thoughtful for a moment. She then began smiling, started jumping up and down and clapped her hands excitedly. When I asked her what she was thinking, she replied, “Mina, I have three cousins in heaven!”.

Mr 10:15 “Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it [at all.]”

I pray that I might have the ‘temper and spirit of a child’ who is teachable, humble, and untarnished by expectations of deservedness. Whatever I’ve been given is a gift, completely unmerited. Let me be forever mindful of being saved from what I truly deserve and thankful for blessings too numerous to count.  Keep me focused on Your promises for the future instead of my predictions of what should be.

Avengers/Defenders — Who is your Superhero?

What do superheroes do? According to Wikipedia, they have supernatural powers and are dedicated to fighting crime, protecting the public and battling supervillains.

Of course with grandchildren all five and under, I’ve been reintroduced to the world of superheroes!  I still don’t have a clear picture in my mind of who belongs to what group.  There are Guardians of the Galaxy, the Justice League, someone called Ironman and another called Thor.  I’m not up to date on all their superpowers yet, but I think this information is in my future!

What do superheroes do?  According to Wikipedia, they have supernatural powers and are dedicated to fighting crime, protecting the public and battling supervillains.  Superheroes are fictional characters dating back to at least the early 1900’s.  Robin Hood was perhaps the first who wore a distinctive mask and costume.  In the 1940’s, the superhero era took off with the invention of Green Lantern and The Flash.  This movement has continued to expand and is as popular as ever.  Especially in my house!  Apparently there is always crime to fight and people to save when the grandkids get together!!

We want superheroes.  We actually need superheroes.  But not necessarily of the imaginative kind.  Is their crime present in your city?  Do evil intentions of others prey upon innocence?  Do villains exist in the here and now?  Of course!

You’ve probably seen or heard of this saying:  “God is my Superhero”!  This statement is truth!  Does He vindicate righteousness?  Will he protect the lowly?  Check out Psalm 119:126-128.

Live without fear, He’s got your back!

Superheroes/Avengers/Defenders!! Ps. 119:126-128

Ps 119:126 It is time for the LORD to act, [For] they have broken Thy law.
At the beginning of this section in verses 121 and 122, the Psalmist speaks of those who are deceitful and arrogant. They are wrongfully representing God’s law. It is difficult to continuously see the misrepresentation of Truth. The desire to see God’s justice is strong.

When bad living and bad doctrine cast a slur upon religion, we may importunately beg the Lord to interfere to protect the interests of his own word. Are we not living in precisely such times? Spurgeon Devotional Commentary

Who does the Psalmist plead to for help? It is God’s work to avenge sin.
There is hope and encouragement in knowing God will defend His truth. What can we do when we are discouraged with sin around us?

How has God acted in the past against individuals or nations who have maligned His word?
Deuteronomy 29:20 says God’s anger will burn against them, He will send curses to rest upon them and He will erase their name from heaven.
Hosea 4:17 says He will abandon them.
In Deuteronomy 28:38-40 and Amos 14:10 God will destroy them with disease.
Again in the books of Deuteronomy and Amos, God causes a famine. Accounts of nations being put to the sword and held in captivity are in the books of Exodus, Jeremiah and Ezekiel. God’s destruction of nations and individuals who are enemies of the Truth are numerous. Disobedience is punished again and again because God is righteous. There is no question of God’s judgment. The Psalmist understands this and holds on to God’s promise of righting what is wrong.

All of us are guilty of disobedience yet God has shown us mercy through His grace. The sin spoken of in Psalm 119:126 is an effort to frustrate God’s laws to the point of cancelling it out altogether.

Those that sin through infirmity [weakness] transgress the law, but presumptuous [arrogant, bold] sinners do in effect make void the law, saying, Who is the Lord? What is the Almighty, that we should fear him? It is possible a godly man may sin against the commandment, but a wicked man would sin away the commandment, would repeal God’s laws and enact his own lusts. This is the sinfulness of sin and the malignity of the carnal mind. Matthew Henry’s Commentary on the Whole Bible

Have made void thy law; or, abrogated thy law; have professedly and openly cast off its authority, resolvedly preferring their own wills and lusts before it, trampled upon thy plain commands, and despised both thy promises and thy threatenings. They have not only sinned through ignorance and infirmity, but presumptuously and. maliciously. Matthew Poole’s Commentary

Verse 126: They “make void the law of God,” who deny its obligation and authority, who obscure or explain away its meaning, and who render it of none effect by their traditions, or by their lives. Thomas Scott

What a glorious day it will be when God’s honor is vindicated and judgement comes down upon those who have purposed to disobey Him!
Who do you depend on when sin seems to prevail? How do you react? What is our example in the verses following Ps 119:126?
Ps 119:127-128 Therefore I love Thy commandments above gold, yes, above fine gold. 128 Therefore I esteem right all [Thy] precepts concerning everything, I hate every false way.
Therefore – because God’s word is excellent, I …
— Love God’ and His Truth
v. 121 for its protection
v. 122 for its security
v. 123 for its deliverance, for its righteousness
v. 124 for its mercy, for its instruction
v. 125 for its wisdom
v. 126 for its appointed time
— Hate what is false
v. 121 it is oppressive, it is deceitful
v. 122 it is arrogant, it is presumptuous
v. 126 it frustrates truth

Do you love God’s word more than any treasure on earth?
above fine gold:
Ps 19:10 They are more desirable than gold, yes, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the drippings of the honeycomb.
Ps 12:6 The words of the LORD are pure words; As silver tried in a furnace on the earth, refined seven times.
Ps 119:72 The law of Thy mouth is better to me Than thousands of gold and silver [pieces].
Pr 8:11 “For wisdom is better than jewels; And all desirable things cannot compare with her.
The evidence of loving God’s word is to hate sin. We live in a world where the lines between right and wrong are quickly fading. Sin is justified and even encouraged as being ‘open minded, non-judgmental, and accepting of everyone and everything’. Yet, there can be no compromise in following God’s absolute truth. Are the lines between truth and sin crystal clear in your own life?
Ver. 127. — I love thy commandments above gold; yea, above fine gold. The image employed brings before us the picture of the miser; his heart and his treasure are in his gold. With what delight he counts it! With what watchfulness he keeps it! Hiding it in safe custody, lest he should be despoiled of that which is dearer to him than life. Such should Christians be, spiritual misers, counting their treasure which is “above fine gold”; and “hiding it in their hearts,” in safe keeping, where the great despoiler shall not be able to reach it. Oh, Christians! How much more is your portion to you than the miser’s treasure! Hide it; watch it; retain it. You need not be afraid of covetousness in spiritual things: rather “covet earnestly” to increase your store; and by living upon it and living in it, it will grow richer in extent, and more precious in value. –Charles Bridges.

Ps 119:128 Therefore I esteem right all [Thy] precepts concerning everything, I hate every false way.
Because I am trying to follow You (v.121); because of Your protection (v.122), because of my longing for righteousness (v.123), because You are merciful (v.124), because You teach me Truth (v.124), because I desire to serve with understanding and knowledge (v.125), because You avenge those against You (v.126), because I love Your commandments more than anyone or anything else (v.127), therefore I honor Truth and hate sin.

Notice the words ‘all’ and ‘everything’ in verse 128: I esteem right all [Thy] precepts concerning everything …
There can be no exceptions in following God’s commands. There is no room for agreement with one while not adhering to another. This does not mean we are perfect, but our heart desires to perfectly follow God in all His ways.

If it’s from God’s word – love it, study it, do it, guard it;

If it disagrees with God’s word – hate it, don’t waste your time in it, don’t do it, throw it out!

Ps 119:104 From Thy precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way.
For the more I consider them, the more I approve every one of them (as the exactest and best rule whereby I square all my action), and abhor all those base and dishonest ways whereby others study to advance themselves to riches and honors. Patrick/Lowth/Whitby/Lowman Commentary

Ps 19:7-8 The law of the Lord is good, giving new life to the soul: the witness of the Lord is certain, giving wisdom to the foolish. The orders of the Lord are right, making glad the heart: the rule of the Lord is holy, giving light to the eyes.
His detestation was as unreserved as his affection; he had not a good word for any practice which would not bear the light of truth. The fact that such large multitudes follow the broad road had no influence upon this holy mail, except to make him more determined to avoid every form of error and sin. May the Holy Spirit so rule in our hearts that our affections may be in the same decided condition towards the precepts of the word. Treasury of David

— every command, however hard; every injunction, however distasteful; every precept, however severe; even cut off thy right hand, pluck out thy right eye; forget thine own people and thy father’s house; take up thy cross daily; sell all that thou hast — yea, Lord, even so, “all thy precepts concerning all things are right.” What a blessed truth to arrive at, and find comfort in! —Barton Bouchier.

Do you hate those things that offend God?
The upright man squares all his actions by a right rule: carnal reason cannot bias him, corrupt practice cannot sway him, but God’s sacred word directs him. Treasury of David

William Cowper uses this description of an animal being led to slaughter: whether it is bound by all four legs or even just by one, it is still led to its death. In the same way, you may not be a slave to all sin but even just bound to one, it is sufficient to damnation. (my wording)

all Thy precepts — concerning everything — every false way

In the Treasury of David, Hints to Preachers, five points are made regarding the Bible.
1. Its science is correct.
2. Its history is true.
3. Its promises are genuine.
4. Its morality is perfect.
5. Its doctrines are divine.

Are you a guardian of Truth, are you living to defend Truth?  Who is your Avenger?

God directs all things for His ultimate glory. If you are His child, having claimed Him as Lord and accepted the gift of His Son’s death, you are in the mighty, powerful hand of the One who directs all physical and natural phenomena

Lightning. An abrupt electric discharge from cloud to cloud or from cloud to earth accompanied by the emission of light. Atmospheric electricity. A physical phenomenon associated with the atmosphere. A physical phenomenon is a natural phenomenon involving the physical properties of matter and energy. A phenomenon is a process known through the senses rather than by intuition or reasoning; a remarkable development.

Here, in the Antelope Valley, we are largely unaware of true weather. It gets hot, it gets windy, and it gets windy and hot. Then it gets cold, it gets windy, and it gets windy and cold. That’s pretty much our weather pattern. If or when we get a sprinkle of water from the sky it is for the most part celebrated and enjoyed for all its worth. If or when we receive real snowflakes or hail  is a topic of conversation for days.

But, I like living here, it kinda grows on you. You learn to appreciate fewer bugs because the hot, dry heat is not conducive to their need for moisture. Bugs dry up quickly. And, the dry weather gives you a reason to try out many beautifully scented lotions because your skin cries for moisture as you watch it shriveling before your eyes – hmmm, citrus or floral??

Lately, we’ve had more moisture than in recent years and all of a sudden earthworms are everywhere. The chickens love them, along with the current development of cockroaches – Arrgh! or “Yucky” (in grandchildren language), a fairly gross insect. My better half has become creative in what to do with these new ‘blessings’. One of our grandsons loves digging up worms and feeding them to the chickens and probably the best natural cockroach deterrent are the dozen beaks of hungry hens!

On to the recent weather. We’ve been experiencing beautiful lightning storms. We’ve even had what you might call short downpours of rain with thunder and lightning. Of course, this makes me think of God’s ultimate power over the universe. He paints the picture of lightning bolts in our sky. He controls the sound of thunder we hear. He knows the number of rain drops He sends. He directs the speed of wind.

Thunder is called the voice of God in His word.

Ps 29:1-4 (A Psalm of David.) Ascribe to the LORD, O sons of the mighty, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. 2 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due to His name; worship the LORD in holy array. 3 The voice of the LORD is upon the waters; the God of glory thunders, the LORD is over many waters. 4 The voice of the LORD is powerful, the voice of the LORD is majestic.

Job 37:2-3 “Listen closely to the thunder of His voice, and the rumbling that goes out from His mouth. 3 “Under the whole heaven He lets it loose, and His lightning to the ends of the earth.

God sets “a limit for the rain, and a course for the thunderbolt”. Job 28:26
See the pictures below that my husband took of a lightning strike last night. First, a course for the direction of lightning is paved by an initial current that comes from the ground. Then the lightning follows that exact path in reverse direction back down to the ground.  Look at the direction of the ‘fingers’ in the second photo. Wow! God’s world!

Who are we to doubt His power? Are you able to answer the questions God asked Job of his understanding of God’s ways?
Job 38:24-25 “Where is the way that the light is divided, [Or] the east wind scattered on the earth? 25 “Who has cleft a channel for the flood, or a way for the thunderbolt;
Job 38:35 “Can you send forth lightnings that they may go and say to you, ‘Here we are’?
God directs all things for His ultimate glory. If you are His child, having claimed Him as Lord and accepted the gift of His Son’s death, you are in the mighty, powerful hand of the One who directs all physical and natural phenomena.
Ps 18:14 And He sent out His arrows, and scattered them, and lightning flashes in abundance, and routed them.
I pray you join me in acknowledging God’s glory and strength, power and majesty (Ps. 29:1-4); His control over all heaven and earth (Job 37:2-3); His direction of all scientific and natural phenomena (Job 28:26; 38:24-25;38:35); and His right to set forth the comings and goings of all things (Ps 18:14).

De 4:35,39 “To you it was shown that you might know that the LORD, He is God; there is no other besides Him. 39 “Know therefore today, and take it to your heart, that the LORD, He is God in heaven above and on the earth below; there is no other.

The Delusion of a Deserved Soul

It’s so common to separate people into categories and then point out what’s wrong with thinking that is not in agreement with your own. Aren’t we all desiring of kindness, generosity, and acceptance from others?

After several minutes of watching the latest news on the devastation of hurricanes in Texas, the direct hit over several Caribbean Islands, and soon to make landfall in Florida, two responses of those affected kept repeating themselves.
One type of response was clearly thankfulness for survival, and the other a resentment to the change in upcoming plans. People upset because airports have cancelled flights due to dangerous conditions and damage. Tempers flaring because rooms are full at hotels. Then, you have the ones who are just thankful to be alive and already out there helping to make right a catastrophe.
The human mind. So capable of selfishness; so capable of generosity. It seems so many of us have forgotten what we truly deserve. Or at least, we don’t address it. What do we deserve? The quick answer is ‘nothing, we deserve nothing’. The right answer is death, we deserve physical and spiritual death.
It’s so common to separate people into categories and then point out what’s wrong with thinking that is not in agreement with your own. Aren’t we all desiring of kindness, generosity, and acceptance from others? The Bible says we are created in God’s own image. Who came along and decided in man’s eyes what that image should look like?
Selfish thinking puts me first. Above all others, on the throne in my soul. It sometimes even treads over others to build our precious kingdom of self filled with imaginative rights to protect. Selfishness is being concerned chiefly or exclusively with oneself. It’s looking to your own advantage while choosing to remain unconcerned about others. Is that how you want to be described? Are you delusional with the belief that all existence centers on you for your benefit? What do you believe you deserve?
Re 3:17 ‘Because you say, “I am rich, and have become wealthy, and have need of nothing,” and you do not know that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked,
Le 19:18 ‘You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself; I am the LORD.
I wonder what would happen if complaints about what we lost, or not getting what we think is due, was looked at with an eye of understanding, thankfulness and love.
People are suffering because of nature’s fury. How important are your plans that anger is permissible when flights are cancelled or cruises are shortened or hotels are full – all as a result of something we can’t control? If we have the mindset that these things are undeserved, but rather gifts, we may find ourselves more concerned about loving others and looking to their needs.

A Complete Picture Pr 2:6

How often do we truly consider the totality of who God is, the full picture of His attributes, the completeness of His love for us, and the perfect plan He has in place for the world?

The Lord gives wisdom.
Who is the Lord? Think about it. How would you answer this question if someone were to ask?
Occasionally, my husband and I like to work on puzzles. It’s a fun, relaxing, together thing. The best part is when finally, after hours, days and even weeks of work, it comes down to only a dozen pieces left out of thousands. But, then the realization hits that you got about 95% of the pieces in the right place but there are a few areas that need to be adjusted. The pieces almost fit but not quite, it looked okay, yet when study the picture with a close eye it becomes clear that not all the pieces have been placed correctly.  To add to that, as you look around, you notice a stray piece on the floor. What you end up with is an almost complete picture.
How often do we truly consider the totality of who God is, the full picture of His attributes, the completeness of His love for us, and the perfect plan He has in place for the world? There really is so much to look at. When we’re weary, we come to God as sustainer. When we’re not sure which direction to turn, He leads us down the right path. There are infinite pieces of God’s character that all fit together. However, I am unable to fully comprehend how it all works. As we try to develop a more extensive thought of how we would describe the Lord, I for one, have a renewed appreciation and understanding of His magnificence and I am overwhelmed by His demonstration of love for me. I pray you join me in the quest of searching for a more complete view of God as we take a closer look at Proverbs 2:6.  Just click on the reference for more…

Where’ditgo?? “He will not allow your foot to slip…”

Isn’t it cool when God says very clearly ‘Stop’!  I’m thankful for His perfect guidance.

After working on Proverbs 2:6 for several days I thought I was ready to post the study and was directed elsewhere.  I typically save my studies then open my blog and paste.  Well, when I went to paste the new document it was blank except for one bible verse!  Where’ditgo??!!!  (This is how one of our grandson’s asks this question 🙂  I spent more time than I should have trying everything I could think of to recover my work.  Then, my sweetheart spent several hours doing the same.  I must confess I did experience a few moments of considerable frustration before I decided to just walk away.

The good thing is I finished canning our grape jam!  The bad thing is, I am unable to post the study today.  I do believe God’s hand is in this cyber world and His protection is always available as we ask.  I had questioned part of the relevancy of the study.  The truth was accurate but my concern was if I was close to the line of allowing my passion for a potential problem  become the focus of my study.  Isn’t it cool when God says very clearly ‘Stop’!  I’m thankful for His perfect guidance.  I truly want this blog to honor Him and be focused on His words.

Jude 1:24 Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy,

Ps 121:3 He will not allow your foot to slip; He who keeps you will not slumber.

Smiling!

Praise God for giving us so many things to  enjoy!  I remember hearing words that said something like ‘God could have made everything black and white but He chose to give us colors of all kinds to enjoy’.  Consider the blessings we have, all so undeserving!

Yesterday I opened my email to this encouraging picture my husband made.Love, love, love his creativity!  Finally, I think the fig production is slowing down.  Fresh figs, preserved figs, dried figs — all are happily in their keeping places now with just a few figs per day (6-8) ripening on the trees.  The oat-fig bars I made were soooo good I am told (I’ve completely lost my sense of smell and taste but that’s another whole story and challenge).  You can find the recipe I used on my Pinterest account at Sharyn Balogh under sweets. Below are pictures of God’s bountiful produce.  Praise God for giving us so many things to  enjoy!  I remember hearing words that said something like ‘God could have made everything black and white but He chose to give us colors of all kinds to enjoy’.  Consider the blessings we have, all so undeserving!  On to making cinnamon apple chips with the rest of the apple pickens’, then to finishing a baby quilt, preparing for an overnight with one of our grandsons and meeting with a dear friend.   I pray your day is blessed with a heightened sense of God’s love for you.  Focus Heavenward!

Prov 2:5 A Sincere and Earnest Heart

  • Pr 2:5 Then you will discern the fear of the LORD, and discover the knowledge of God.
‘Then’ directs us back to the scriptures leading up to this verse.
Pr 2:1 If you receive my sayings
If you treasure my commandments within you
Pr 2:2 If you make your ear attentive to wisdom
If you incline your heart to understanding
Pr 2:3 If you cry for discernment
If you lift your voice for understanding
Pr 2:4 If you seek her as silver
If you search for her as for hidden treasures
    The result:
Pr 2:5 Then you will discern the fear of the LORD, and discover the knowledge of God.
Notice how these words are certain, there is no question. God will teach us about Himself. He will give us understanding. That truth in itself is crazy amazing!
discern <biyn> to separate mentally (or distinguish), (generally) understand: attend consider, be cunning, discern, inform, instruct, have intelligence, know, look well to, perceive, regard, deal wisely.
    1. We will understand the fear of the Lord.
fear <yir’ah> morally, reverence, dreadful, exceedingly, fearfulness.

The Crazy Amazing Wonder of God Pr 2:5

So as I was completing my study of Proverbs 2:5, I could hardly wait to share it with you!  It is so far beyond my comprehension that God, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, over all creation, wants me to know and understand who He is.  Mind boggling, right?!

I want to shout, I want to sing, I want to dance with the joy of Truth and Hope that is real.  I pray you join me in this sentiment for your Father God.

Do you remember being in school and dividing up for teams on the playground?  You would all stand in line acting like it was no big deal, but secretly you hoped you wouldn’t be the last one picked.  You wanted to be wanted!  I tried sports a few times.  This is how it went:  In grammar school I played softball and broke my nose; In high school I played volleyball and broke my finger; in fact, just walking home from school I sprained my ankle. Needless to say I was never first-picked for a team!  I took dance classes, played the piano and was a cheerleader instead.  I tried to be physically active again as an adult so I began running.  I slipped and fell in a gutter, tore the rotator cuff in my shoulder, tore a ligament in my knee and ended up having surgery on both!  That’s why, when you read the blurb about my blog, you will see nothing about my love for physical sports!  I’m thankful, my children were all athletic in school and enjoyed being a part of many teams.

So, what’s the point of this story?  God has hand-picked each of His children and called them to Himself.  To be part of His team, His family.  I don’t need to be especially coordinated, fast or strong to be chosen by Him.  He doesn’t even care about my past performance — in His record book, I’m seen through His Son’s perfection.  He looks deeper than my appearance and abilities, He looks at my heart.  He wanted me so much that He paid the ultimate sacrifice for me, even before I knew Him.

Once you are chosen for a team and play through the entire season, your hopeful result is to win it all.  Get the trophy, get the ribbon, get the title!  If you’re on God’s team, you win:

You have the trophy– the certain hope of heaven,

You have the ribbon — His love engraved on your heart,

You have the title — heir to the King!

Display it, wear it, talk about it, be excited about it, be thankful for Him.

Refiner’s Fire Pr 2:4

I’m fighting the frustration of learning computer language, I guess it’s good to be challenging my brain cells to grow!  Anyhow, the neat thing I realized is that I absolutely would not be doing this blog if I didn’t believe God wanted me here.  For Him, I will persevere into this world of technology.  I want to remain focused on the purpose of this blog and that is to encourage others to live for the God of my heart, to serve Him, understand Him, follow Him and recognize our desperate need for Him.  That means if one individual is motivated to look closer at our Lord and Savior then this blog is worthwhile and successful.  So, I’m not so much counting numbers as I am the opportunity to share my love for God.  He wants your devoted heart and He wants to supply you with an overflowing treasure chest of love.  All praise and glory and honor to Him, forever.

My better-half, and I say that truthfully, retired a few years ago.  He taught as a Professor of Physical Science at our local college.  His degrees are in physical geology and physical geography.  After thirty-seven years of teaching those subjects as well as math, physics, mining and astronomy, a series of medical issues made it clear it was time to open a different door.  In the years we’ve been married, I have developed some appreciation for rocks and have been on several gold panning trips!  “The Things You do for Love”!  Mining is really hard work.  Trust me.  Several times I have been known to say, “Keep your day job”.  It takes soooo much time, hiking down gullies with equipment, setting up a sluice, digging with shovels, moving boulders.  It certainly helps me to relate to the words in Proverbs 2:4 about seeking silver and the energy involved!  You can check out the study here.

God continues to cause our fig trees to produce huge numbers of fruit!  I’ve made fig jam, fig oat bars, salads with fresh figs, eaten several figs just off the trees, given dozens away and I still have bowls of figs!  Any ideas?  I would welcome them!  I pray you clearly see the wonders around you even in the midst of a corrupt world.  Take heart in knowing God will continue to refine His children for His glory.

How Intense is Your Quest?

I’m thankful for the clear word pictures we have been given in the Bible. God knows exactly how to describe the fervor He wants us to have for Him! We continue on with Proverbs 2:4 as we read about the intensity of our quest.

Pr 2:4 If you seek her as silver, And search for her as for hidden treasures;
Precious metals have been valued by all cultures since biblical times. The first mention of them in the Word is in Genesis 2:11 speaking of the land of Havilah where there is gold. Again in Genesis 13:2, silver and gold is mentioned as part of Abram’s wealth. Land was purchased with silver (Gen 23:15), people were purchased for silver (Gen 27:28), articles of silver were crafted, silver was used in the judicial system as payment for the guilty. Silver was used as an offering, as payment and in commercial trade; silver utensils, tables and bowls filled the Tabernacle. Silver was overlaid on the walls of buildings. Silver had to be mined, then it was refined with heat.

Read this excerpt from Wikipedia on the history of silver. “Silver has been known since ancient times. Silver is mentioned in the Book of Genesis, and slag heaps found in Asia Minor and on the islands of the Aegean Sea indicate that silver was being separated from lead as early as the 4th millennium BC. The silver mines at Laurium were very rich and helped provide a currency for the economy of Ancient Athens. It involved mining the ore in underground galleries, washing the ores and smelting it to produce the metal. Elaborate washing tables still exist at the site using rain water held in cisterns and collected during the winter months.”

Silver <keceph> means money. It was a form of money in ancient times. Today, silver is still sought after and has value.
Think about what people do for money. Often, money is desired above all else. The source of it such as fame and success is the primary goal of many individuals. In fact, we’ve all read or heard of stories about the crazy, often dishonest tactics used to procure money. Unfortunately, people will lie, cheat, steal, sell their bodies and illegal drugs, and even kill to feed their ambition of accumulating monetary wealth. There is a clear account of selling your soul for money in the Bible. Remember the bag of silver coins given to Judas as he betrayed Jesus?

Wouldn’t it be cool to take the desire and pursuit of money that this world has and transfer that same intense energy to a desire and pursuit of God? Where are you on your quest for riches – in the world or in the Word?

Job 28:12-20 “But where can wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding? “Man does not know its value, Nor is it found in the land of the living. “The deep says, ‘It is not in me’; And the sea says, ‘It is not with me.’ “Pure gold cannot be given in exchange for it, Nor can silver be weighed as its price. “It cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir, in precious onyx, or sapphire. “Gold or glass cannot equal it, Nor can it be exchanged for articles of fine gold. “Coral and crystal are not to be mentioned; and the acquisition of wisdom is above that of pearls. “The topaz of Ethiopia cannot equal it, Nor can it be valued in pure gold. “Where then does wisdom come from? And where is the place of understanding?

What does it mean to seek for something?
seek <baquah> to search out, to strive after – ask, beg, beseech, desire, enquire, get, make inquisition …
What thoughts or pictures come into mind as you read the definition above? Modern technology has put information literally at our fingertips. We have things called search engines that allow us to gather information on just about anything with the touch of a few buttons, or  with  a verbal command. I have someone called ‘Cortana’ on my PC. I’ve never met her, I don’t know where she lives, but she is always ready to help me search. She even asks me questions, “Is there something I can do for you”? In fact there is a ‘click here’ notice that tells me Cortana can do much more than I use her for! Hmmm, I wonder, perhaps I should look into this: maybe she does dishes, laundry and washes the floor!! Hahaha, I don’t really know if this is funny or scary. In any case, all this searching takes time, and often, people spend excessive amounts of time in their quest for information. It’s like opening up a bag of potato chips, or in my case M&M’s :), it’s difficult to stop. One thing leads to another and you can get completely engrossed in the discovery of information.

I would like to propose that we all strive to develop this problem when it comes to studying the word of God. Let’s truly seek out His wisdom. Let’s follow His guidance as He leads us from one scripture to another. May we not be satisfied with just a taste of Truth! Let’s indulge in it! Let’s become engrossed in our desire to gain understanding. I would like to be accused of spending too much time seeking to understand my precious God!

Proverbs 2:4 not only describes seeking wisdom as for silver, but also depicts a picture of searching for wisdom as you would hidden treasures. Now this sounds like fun, right?! You may be interested to look at my blog on this website dated August 22, 2017 to read about how my Dad literally dug up hidden treasure!

Picture a big metal bin overflowing with treasure. A veritable pirate’s treasure chest! If you were told that in no uncertain terms you would find incredibly valuable treasure by carefully following a map you would be given, would you go for it? Would you be all in? Remember, there is absolutely no doubt or question to its authenticity – the treasure is a sure thing. Most of us would be eager to begin this adventure. We might even plan how the treasure would change our future.

Do you diligently seek the hidden treasure in God’s words? Our church’s women’s retreat last year focused on the treasure we’ve been given as God’s children. We have in our possession, the greatest treasure of all – God’s grace! God’s grace means we have been given all we need at the expense of Jesus’ death. God’s grace is accessible to His children because He loves us enough to have gone to the highest extreme of covering our sin with the sacrifice of His perfect Son. When Christ died he paid for all sin, when He arose, sins grip on us was loosed, it’s control banished. Where do we find God’s grace? In God, in His written word to us, in His miraculous work for us. Everything we could ever need or want within His will, is ours in abundance. We just have to be willing to dig for the treasure! Effort and diligence are needed to accomplish something of value. Take an honest look at where your time and energy is spent and you will get a good idea of what you value.

When we search the Word, we will find treasures, hidden riches revealed to us through the ministry of the Holy Spirit in us.
What treasures in God’s word have you found lately? Are you digging deep enough? Are you willing to give up your own goals and desires in order to follow after God’s commands?
Mt 13:44 “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid; and from joy over it he goes and sells all that he has, and buys that field.
Php 3:7-10 But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ. 8 More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish in order that I may gain Christ,  9 and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from [the] Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which [comes] from God on the basis of faith, 10 that I may know Him, and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death;

“[If thou seekest her as silver].  How do men seek money? What will they not do to get rich? Reader, seek the salvation of thy soul as earnestly as the covetous man seeks wealth; and be ashamed of thyself, if thou be less in earnest after the true riches than he is after perishing wealth”. Adam Clarke’s Commentary

Pr 16:16 How much better it is to get wisdom than gold! And to get understanding is to be chosen above silver.
Ps 119:14 I have rejoiced in the way of Thy testimonies, As much as in all riches.
Ps 119:72 The law of Thy mouth is better to me Than thousands of gold and silver pieces.

One last question God put on my heart: Once you find His treasure what are you doing with it? Are you simply storing it up and nothing more, are you inclined to only  admire it and receive personal encouragement and direction,  or are you reaching out to others, using it for God’s glory?

How intense is your quest for God?

August 25, 2017 Bleat Like a Sheep Pr 2:3

How do you know if something or someone is important to yourself or to another person? Think words like time, energy, sacrifice, resources. Back in the day, when checkbooks were something we all used, there was a saying, “Look at your checkbook and you will get a good picture of where your money goes”. I remember each beginning of a new year I would be excited to pick out a new calendar. Our lives were written in that calendar! You could look back and see where much of our time was spent. When I was in my twenties, I seemed to have more time to get things done! I was able to check off most things on my to-do list. Now, one year away from sixty, I feel accomplished to finish only a task or two — time moves much quicker as I move slower 🙂 But, where is my time spent? What’s important to me? Or better yet, what is most valuable to me? Sheep have an unfortunate reputation for being stupid and needy. But, they cry out for their shepherd because they recognize their need. It is crucial for their survival that he is always nearby. Think about your relationship with the Shepherd as you study Proverbs 2:3. I want to learn to bleat like a sheep!

August 23, 2017 Do You Want to be Wise? Pr 2:2

As I was writing a study on Proverbs 2:2 I was reminded of the need for truly understanding something in order to have wisdom about it. There is a story of a woman who always made meatloaf the same way. After she would carefully form the loaf for her baking dish, she would gently cut off the ends. One day when asked why she did that, she paused and thoughtfully replied, ‘Because my mother always did’. This caused her to realize she didn’t really understand the reason this was done. She asked her elderly mom why the ends of the meatloaf had to be trimmed before baking it. The mother’s answer: ‘because that’s how it fit into the pan I used’! How often do we do things without true understanding? Isn’t it so cool is that God wants to give us His wisdom and understanding if we just come to Him with a sincere heart!

August 18, 2017

Great time studying in the Word this morning!! This is pretty much always true but I am continuously in awe of God and the riches He unfolds in His precious words to us. I am totally, completely in love with my Savior! I pray you can join me in this statement. Check out the description of David’s longing for God in the new study I posted. Psalm 119:131. Now, time to pick even more figs — did you know a fig tree, unlike many other fruit trees — keeps on producing throughout the summer/fall season? It doesn’t have just one yield but several over time. I’m excited to work on the dinosaur quilt for baby boy grandchild #5 and not so excited to get the laundry done but incredibly thankful God didn’t insert me into the time of pioneer women 🙂 Can’t even imagine pounding my clothes with rocks in a stream to wash them! Dear God, thank you for washing machines and clothes dryers…. really, this is sincere.

August 17, 2017

Boy, is my mind being stretched! I feel like my brain is sweating as it’s trying to activate new brain cells 🙂 There have been some glitches in the blog but with the patient help of my Better-Half and support from WordPress, I think we’re good to go again!
I’ve received numerous emails about how to write a ‘proper’ blog, how to increase your number of ‘hits’ and key words to use. As I’ve read these articles, I can’t help but remember my purpose for doing this. I want to encourage others to get excited about the unfolding of God’s precious word to His children. Each day and often each moment, He showers His love upon us. We just have to get used to expecting His blessings. It’s amazing how you begin to notice them more as you learn more about God. So I may not follow the rules in blogging or be very savvy in the form or methods used but I look to a webmaster who’s name is God Almighty.
Yesterday, I was looking at a mountain-load of fresh figs from our trees in the backyard. Fresh figs are a delight to eat but you can only eat so many. After precious time with some dear sisters in the Lord setting up the schedule for our Women’s Bible Study and then my own time in the Word, I made a large batch of fig jam! Yummy, wish you could taste it!
At our Women’s Bible Study meeting yesterday, I was reminded of one of the first studies I wrote. The reference is Proverbs 2:1-6. There are conditions to meet and a promise made. In my own words: If you accept and treasure God’s commands (v.1), give heed to the wisdom revealed , yield your will and intellect to understanding (v.2), call, even cry out to God for knowledge and understanding (v.3), search for meaning as you would precious treasure (v.4), THEN you will understand what it means to fear and know God (v.5). He gives wisdom, knowledge and understanding! (v.6)
These verses are so encouraging!! What God wants from us is a genuine desire to know Him, to recognize Him as God. He wants to reveal His truths to His children. I remember as a child always having a Bible in our home and even as a young adult a Bible sat on my coffee table. But, it was for someone else to interpret, it may as well have been written in secret code. When I was saved, brought to my knees before the One True God, He caused me to immediately begin to understand that His word wasn’t just a book that looked nice or that a ‘good’ Christian should have displayed. It’s His personal message to me, it describes His love for me. The Bible tells me how to live a life honoring to the One who created me. And… it was written for me to understand and follow. I pray you are encouraged to dig in and ask God to show you His riches!

This is a beautiful day! Time in the Word this morning, coffee with my Best Friend, shampooed living room and dining room carpets, now onto working in my sewing room on the dinosaur quilt for my 5th little grandbaby due September 12th! The lyrics of one of the songs we sang at church continues to run through my mind as a prayer: “Give me one pure and holy passion, give me one magnificent obsession, Jesus give me one glorious ambition for my life: to know and follow hard after You.” Amen!

So here we go. I’m petrified mostly because I’m not very computer savvy. Why am I doing this blog? Well, I love God. Plain and simple. I love studying the Bible and writing and being encouraged, challenged, reminded, comforted by God’s word. I love sharing what I find in His word with other woman. It is a blessing to hear how God is working in their lives and hearing their stories encourages me to continue to move forward in my pursuit of knowing Him.
My plan is to post weekly Bible studies with application and questions to help all of us continue to grow in our faith. Along with the studies, I’ll share some of my day and how God faithfully intervenes in my plans to provide opportunities to stretch me and serve others. Boy, can I mess up at times : ), but to His glory, I’m saved by God’s grace and mercy. As long as I’m upright, as in a vertical position, my desire is to keep the focus of all I do on the One who provides all I have.
Much of my time in the Word recently has been in Psalm 119 carefully breaking down each verse with the prayer of better understanding and appropriate application. The last few days I’ve been looking at Ps 119:129 which says “Thy testimonies are wonderful; therefore my soul observes them.” The word wonderful means that God’s word is a miracle, it is marvelous!! Therefore with my soul – or my entire being, including my thoughts, words, and actions – I will keep them, I will follow them, I will protect them. Wow! This makes me think of a sincere love for someone or something. Doesn’t it lead to a response? Words alone have little meaning without action. Lord, help me to live the love I have for You!

About Me

You know it’s difficult to write about yourself. The most important fact I can disclose is that I’m saved by God’s grace through faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. My desire is to live a life honoring to God in response for the gift of salvation I’ve been given. This is so much easier said than done! I struggle daily with right choices, right words, right thoughts, and right actions. My best and only defense against sin is the power of God in me and for that I am inexpressibly thankful.

I have three amazing grown-up children who have responded to God’s call in their lives along with their spouses. One of the great joys of my life is knowing my children and their families strive to serve and follow God. My grandchildren are another wonderful joy in my life! My husband and I are blessed with five beautiful grandchildren to date with another expected very soon. We also are thankful for the comforting knowledge that an additional three of our grandchildren, are in our Savior’s presence.

I have attended the same church since the day my eyes were opened to Truth over thirty years ago. How fortunate it is to have been led by God’s hand immediately to a church body that follows the Bible, no man-made doctrines, just the Word clear and strong. My husband is my best friend, my confidant, my encourager, and I still can’t believe how blessed I am by his example of love and generosity towards everyone around him. He is God-fearing, compassionate, and kind and I have learned so much from him.

I am a daughter to my almost 95 year-old mother, sister to three brothers, a wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, aunt, great-aunt, neighbor and friend. That means, whomever is reading this, we probably have something in common! I love every unique role I have been placed in. I’m frequently stretched and sometimes feel like silly putty that wants to bounce right back into my comfort zone. My greatest ambition is to be a follower of Jesus; a light that shines for Him at all times, in all circumstances.  I do not write as a scholar but as a child of God, saved by His grace alone.  I pray your walk is enriched by the application of His truths in your life.

As of date, God has graciously led me to publish three books.  “Until Death Do We Meet”, “Steeped in God’s Grace”, and “Faith Versus Fear – Peace In A Pandemic”, are available through Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

So, there it is, a bit about me.  However, my existence cannot be defined without Jesus Christ, my Lord and my Savior. His love has permeated my life to His glory and my eternal thankfulness.

Bleat like a Sheep!

Pr 2:1-2 My son, if you will receive my sayings, And treasure my commandments within you, 2 Make your ear attentive to wisdom, Incline your heart to understanding; Pr 2:3 For if you cry for discernment, Lift your voice for understanding;
Onward to Proverbs 2:3! But first a quick review of verses 1 and 2.
The conditions:
Accepting God’s words
Guarding and keeping His words
The result:
Leads to heeding God’s wisdom and
The skill of understanding how to apply God’s wisdom with all your heart, mind and soul
Now, in Proverbs 2:3 we find the reiteration, marking the importance, of seeking wisdom. The effort that is a part of seeking wisdom is imparted to us through vivid word pictures. This prepares us for the promise that follows in verse five.
Pr 2:3 For if you cry for discernment, Lift your voice for understanding;
‘For’ means because or since. You could say, ‘Yes, if you do this…’ or ‘truly, if you do this…’ These words naturally set the reader up to expect a result.
Think about what it means to cry for discernment. To cry comes from the Hebrew <qara’> meaning to call out, to cry. This is no silent request! When you really, really want something what happens to your voice? Doesn’t it get more intense, perhaps louder? Picture a young child who wants something in the most extreme way – you can almost hear it, can’t you?!  How important is it to you to know God? Important enough to shout it for all to hear? Important enough to plead for understanding of His truths?
Something that comes to mind as I’m studying this is the fact that we cannot understand God’s mind. Remember how God questions Job! So how does the idea of crying for understanding mesh with the fact of not being able to fully understand God? This question makes my brain hurt… Let’s go to  the Word.
Ro 11:33 Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways!
Ps 139:6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; It is too high, I cannot attain to it.
God chooses to bless His children with the understanding they need in order to live a life pleasing to Him. But this wisdom is not complete; we cannot know the hearts of men as God does, we cannot know the needs of those around us unless they give us information. The Bible says God knows what we need even before we ask (Mt 6:8). God will give us the understanding we need to accomplish the works He sets before us.
God appointed Solomon king. Solomon knew he needed help to walk down the path God placed before him.
2Ch 1:10-12 “Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people; for who can rule this great people of Thine?” And God said to Solomon, “Because you had this in mind, and did not ask for riches, wealth, or honor, or the life of those who hate you, nor have you even asked for long life, but you have asked for yourself wisdom and knowledge, that you may rule My people, over whom I have made you king, wisdom and knowledge have been granted to you. And I will give you riches and wealth and honor, such as none of the kings who were before you has possessed, nor those who will come after you.”
When we look at Proverbs 2:5 later in this series of study, we will see that our understanding is based more on knowing Who God is which produces an understanding of our dependence on His work in our lives. Wisdom is fearing and knowing God, not acting as He would for this is impossible for an imperfect human.
Pr 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
Let’s get back to where we were in Proverbs 2:3!
Discernment can be used interchangeably with knowledge, understanding and wisdom. An easy picture of someone without discernment are those who speak without thinking. Have you said something or acted upon something without having full appreciation for the details involved? I’ve been guilty of this at times and when you step back and realize your error it is truly humiliating and embarrassing. I am happy to cry for discernment, I need it and others will be blessed if I practice it!
We have the picture of crying for discernment followed by ‘lifting your voice for understanding’.
Again, we see the desire to understand God followed up by great effort. This phrase seems to carry the same meaning as crying for discernment but with even stronger force. In the definition of voice <qowl>, I read the word ‘bleating’! Of course, the first thing I picture is a sheep :).  Sheep are timid, defenseless, readily preyed upon animals. They are typically not described as smart or intelligent! The imaginative picture of bleating is accurate considering we are referred to as God’s sheep in His word. John 10:27 “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” Doesn’t this idea reaffirm the need we have for knowing God?! We are truly lost without Him and that truth should cause us to cry out for Him. The second definition of bleating in WordWeb is to cry plaintively. Perk up your ears – this is a sorrowful howling sound of need and desperation.
How would you sum up the actions in Proverbs 2:3? Think about it. All the action we experienced is exhausting isn’t it! Are you spent for God? How strong is your quest to know God? Are you desperate for Him as a bleating sheep?

Seek Wisdom

Proverbs 2:2 Make your ear attentive to wisdom, Incline your heart to understanding;
Read these additional translations of this verse in the King James and Revised Standard versions of the Bible.
Proverbs 2:2 (KJV) So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, [and] apply thine heart to understanding;
Proverbs 2:2 (RSV) making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding;

A result of following Proverbs 2:1 will cause you to regard the wisdom in God’s word and to yield to the understanding of it. Meeting the conditions of accepting and guarding God’s commands will lead to being attentive to His wisdom and growing in your understanding of God’s word. What a great example of cause and effect! We don’t have to figure it all out, we are responsible to accept and treasure what God says – He will then make it clear to us what He wants us to see.  This truth reminds me of the importance of prayer and time spent reading and studying His truths.

Mt 13:9 “He who has ears, let him hear.”

The words Jesus shared in Matthew 13 were for those with understanding.  Consider the precious gift you have been given to understand the truths in the Bible.  This is not because of your own doing but because of God’s grace.

Proverbs 2:2 uses the word attentive.  Think about what it means to be attentive to something. This word is translated from the Hebrew word <qashab> which means to prick up the ears, hearken, give heed, incline, regard.

If you own a dog, you have seen their ears prick up when they hear something unusual or different. They may even cock their head to one side as they are intently listening. Our sweet little Boston Terrier Rosie use to do this  when we would talk to her. As if to say, “I’m listening”!

Most likely, you have heard the saying, “I’m all ears”.  Think about what this phrase means.  It means ‘I’m listening’, ‘You have my attention’. How about applying this simple thought by turning off your phone, radio, etc. and finding a quiet place out of distractions when you spend time reading the Bible?   Picture this – individuals at a nice restaurant, eyes fixed on their mobile phones, no conversation between them.  What might this convey about the attention being given to their companions? How do you feel when you are trying to communicate to someone and they have their eyes on something else?

The picture of gently turning a child’s face toward you when it is important to communicate to them comes to mind. I know I have said ‘let me see your eyes’ when communicating something important to my children when they were young.  I have done the same with my grandchildren.

Do we give God our full attention?  Do we genuinely seek to know Him?   He wants to give us His wisdom and cause us to be skillful in understanding His word! This is a gift!

Have you ever asked someone why they do a certain thing and you get a response like ‘I don’t know’ or ‘someone else said to do it’ or ‘because this is what I was taught’ or ‘I’ve always done it this way and never really thought about it’?  These answers all lack true understanding.  It is impossible to defend or explain something you do not understand yourself.  Consider that as God’s child, you are under the tutelage of perfect wisdom, truth, and holiness.

Proverbs 22:17-21 Incline your ear and hear the words of the wise, and apply your mind to my knowledge; for it will be pleasant if you keep them within you, that they may be ready on your lips. So that your trust may be in the LORD, I have taught you today, even you. Have I not written to you excellent things of counsels and knowledge, to make you know the certainty of the words of truth that you may correctly answer to him who sent you?

Acts 17:11 Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily, to see whether these things were so.

Look closely at the word ‘heart’ in Proverbs 2:2. It means our feelings, will and intellect. This word also carries the idea of being willing. This is an intentional desire to understand.  I have tried to make someone who is unwilling understand something. Trust me, this never has good results! God wants us to come to Him with our full attention and a willing desire to understand His truths. This means having a genuine heart for God. Words alone, or acknowledging His deity and truths do not suffice. Our diligent efforts to know Him speak of our love for Him.

Pr overbs 23:12 Apply your heart to discipline, and your ears to words of knowledge.
Psalm 119:111-112 I have inherited Thy testimonies forever, for they are the joy of my heart. I have inclined my heart to perform Thy statutes forever, even to the end.
Isaiah 55:3 “Incline your ear and come to Me. Listen, that you may live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, according to the faithful mercies shown to David.

Do we give our full attention to God’s instructions so that we may apply it with understanding?

Where is your treasure?

Proverbs 2:1

First, read Proverbs chapter one. It answers the question, “Why was this book written” and foretells the end of those who neglect following Wisdom. What is wisdom? Knowing and doing God’s will. Where do we find it? In His written word to us, the Bible.

Proverbs 2:1 states two conditions we are to meet as God’s children.
Pr 2:1 My son, if you will receive my sayings, And treasure my commandments within you,
Right away, notice the word ‘if’. If implies choice. Everyone has a choice to either accept God’s truths or reject them. You could also say ‘when’ you receive my sayings, or, ‘whenever’ you receive my sayings.

Think about what it means to receive something. In order to receive something in a positive sense, there needs to be an acceptance of it as in receiving a gift. To receive the word or words of God (in this case penned by Solomon) means we accept it as true and valid. Following are a few scriptures that give us more information on the value of God’s word.

God’s word is inspired. It teaches, reproves, corrects and trains in righteousness.
2Ti 3:16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness;

God’s word is written by men through the work of the Holy Spirit – it is God-breathed.
2Pe 1:21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

God’s word is something we receive in humility, it is pure, it is able to save men from the power of sin and spiritual death.
Jas 1:21 Therefore putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls.

God’s word is delightful and cause for continuous reflection.
Ps 1:2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night.

God’s word is our instruction book on how to live. It is the source of our reason for living with hope.
Ro 15:4 For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.

God’s word is to be embedded in our lives.
Pr 4:21 Do not let them depart from your sight; Keep them in the midst of your heart.

Have you received God’s word as absolute truth? Receiving a gift means we don’t pay for it. What do you do with a precious gift that has been given to you? You treat it as treasure! You protect it for its value. The value is recognized not only for what it is but also for who has given it.
Do you treasure God’s word? How? What does this look like in your life? Would others know you treasure His words?

Your thoughts are welcome.

Desire Truth – Psalm 119:131

Ps 119:131 I opened my mouth wide and panted, for I longed for Thy commandments.

This is a pretty descriptive set of words. It paints a picture for us of the great desire the Psalmist has for Truth. You might even want to start at the beginning of Psalm 119 and mark each time God’s word is mentioned. There are several references used for the word: law, way, testimonies, commandments, precepts, word, judgments, statutes, saying.

opened <pa’ar> to yawn, open wide
mouth <peh> can also mean mind, speech
panted <sha’aph> to inhale eagerly; desire earnestly, devour

Let’s remember the writer of these words. David endures imprisonment, accusation and persecution because of his love for God. Throughout this entire Psalm, he continues to reign in the love he has for God’s word. He recognizes his need at all times of his life, whether he is in adversity or prosperity. In all circumstances, the Psalmist calls upon the word of God for his sustaining comfort and encouragement.

“I opened my mouth wide and panted” is a fairly descriptive picture.
The words to inhale eagerly, desire earnestly, devour are indicative of serious need and want. Think of a newborn baby who has slept for six hours then wakes with an insatiable hunger for its mother’s milk. It is impossible to appease the infant with anything but what is desired. There is nothing else that will fill its need!

Picture a puppy inhaling its food. It seems as though it just can’t get enough and the only thing on its mind is to eat.

David explains his words to us: “for I longed for thy commandments”. His desire for God’s truth is strong. Think of the word yearning. I love this word used in connection with God’s word because it describes a prolonged desire or need, a need that is never completely filled. Let me explain: We will never get enough of the Truth. There is always more. More insight, more encouragement, more instruction, more conviction, more knowledge of God’s love for us and how unfathomable it is! Heaven forbid we ever get to the place where we think we are finished studying God’s truths. The Bible is not a course we take and complete, it is a life-giving, life-sustaining gift from the very mouth of God. It is to be treasured, pondered over, and used frequently. How strong is your desire to know God? Can you affirm with the Psalmist his words, “I opened my mouth wide and panted, for I longed for Thy commandments”?

Ps 42:1-2 As the deer pants for the water brooks, So my soul pants for Thee, O God. 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God; when shall I come and appear before God?
Ps 63:1 (A Psalm of David, when he was in the wilderness of Judah.) O God, Thou art my God; I shall seek Thee earnestly; my soul thirsts for Thee, my flesh yearns for Thee, in a dry and weary land where there is no water.

Do you drink to your fill in God’s word or just sample and taste?
Many of us have that one favorite food that is difficult to pass up. For some, it may be a salty potato chip or buttery popcorn, for others it may be a form of chocolate, perhaps it’s a nut of some kind. If you eat just one, you desire more. It invokes a craving that can’t be satisfied. But, alas, hopefully you use restraint and limit yourself to a reasonable serving.

With God’s word there is no suggested portion size. God ahead and feast on His truth. Let Him increase your appetite to know Him. As you taste what He has for you, your desire will grow for more. It’s true! Spurgeon says, “When the word really enters the soul, it creates a strong desire for more holiness”.
In God alone will His children find contentment.
Ps 81:10 “I, the LORD, am your God, Who brought you up from the land of Egypt; Open your mouth wide and I will fill it.
